I assume you’re referring to The Nickelodeon All Star Brawl. It seems to be a Smash game made for a younger audience, although regular Smash can be played by all ages. I played Melee for Gamecube back in elementary school.
It looks like fun, but it’s definitely not a game I would purchase. It looks like something that I’d enjoy in an arcade to pass time, but I wouldn’t consistently play it. I think it’s a game more targeted towards a younger audience anyway, not to say adults couldn’t enjoy it.
A voice actor played it on his stream yesterday. It didn’t look like the type of game I’d play; I didn’t recognize a lot of the characters and wasn’t a fan of a lot of them. It was fun to watch him play, but I personally wouldn’t play it.
I've read that the game mechanics are trying to mimic Melee and that they are trying to reach the Melee fans who have been let down by recent Smash games. I'm not sure if it will be successful or not, but it seems like an interesting idea for fans of the genre.
It looks like a fun, goofy game. A friend and some of his coworkers are intrigued because of the 90s nostalgia.
He showed me this Twitter video of one of SpongeBob's combo moves where it stuns the other player and you're trapped in there until you die. I'm unsure if it's a bug, so who knows if SpongeBob's happy split attack will be nerfed or not. Either way it's mildly terrifying, lol.
I assume that if I got my hands on the game, I might enjoy playing it to some degree, but I'll probably never find out because I'm not interested enough to actually purchase it. Growing up in the 90s, I do recognize and have some little bit of nostalgia for characters like Ren & Stimpy, Oblina, CatDog, Zim, and so on, but that isn't sufficient enough reason for me to buy it. The art style and the lack of characters making any vocalization whatsoever, not even any old sound effects from the shows, feels really weird. Combine that with the bland, generic music and it just comes across as having an unappealing, cheap shovelware vibe like any other Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network games. Neither channel's games have ever interested me.
