The recent issue of Nintendo Power (February 2011, #264) includes an article listing 30 games it considers "Nintendo DS Essentials." I'm very disappointed that Animal Crossing: Wild World was not included.

Two Professor Layton games are included, but not ACWW.
Two Phoenix Wright games are included, but not ACWW.
Ghost Trick is included, but not ACWW.

I don't understand how ACWW could not be on this list. Did they include more recent games instead because they are more readily available? Is it really merely a marketing ploy?

Wait, just 30 games? What's the big deal then? I own around 90 DS games and AC:WW wouldn't be in my top 30. I don't see why you list Professor Layton, Phoenix Wright, or Ghost Trick, either -- they're all better games than AC:WW in my opinion.

But they have 2 from the same series. ACWW was one of Nintendo's first online games. And how many sales... a lot.

I guess you could make the "one game per series" argument... then again, the games listed in the OP are story-driven, and I personally couldn't choose just one out of either the Phoenix Wright or Professor Layton trilogies. Agree with you on the other points, but I don't know if that alone makes the game an "essential".

i forget when i realized NP was nothing but positive feedback from nintendo.. but it has it's perks, i guess. haven't read one in years, though. i remember it changing a lot/disappearing altogether when i stopped getting them/seeing them.

that is pretty sad that they didn't include it. not even from a fanboy stance.. i doubt there's 30 games that bully it out of at least the lowest spot. it's not the best game, but it's definitely worth having around.

While I agree with you that the five games referenced are great games, I disagree with you that all five are better games than ACWW.

I guess I listed them because they are all roughly from the same genre, yet the hugely successful, immensely popular, inherently "replayable," Nintendo WFC multiplayer virtual-life/simulation video game was not included. I'm disappointed.

ACWW wasn't really a big success over here. I don't really think ACWW is a very good game because of the graphics and other cons. There is a lot other and better games.

Let's also not forget how ACWW introduced us to "downloadable content" via Nintendo WFC letters.
By the way, has anyone received a Puffy Hat recently in a WFC letter?

Yea, I don't mind playing it every so often... but the events (for the most part) aren't that good and are few and far between here in the US.

imo I would have it in there (probably top 10), but that's their choice.

The highest selling Professor Layton game sold less than a 3rd of what ACWW sold. I think ACWW should definitely be on that list, especially if Phoenix Wright is on there. Phoenix Wright isn't essential.

Lol, Nintendo doesn't own NP any more.

Haha, yeah right. Phoenix Wright is one of the greatest videogame series of all time.
i wouldn't go THAT far.. but it was great, in it's own right.

it thrives because it's the only really mentionable game series like that. there's plenty of point-and-click games, but how many of them have lawyers, spirit mediums, and a compelling story?

the gameplay is about as thrilling as opening a box of cracker jack, but the story is expertly told in a way that a book would be hard pressed to emulate. it is one of a kind.
yeah, for it's genre, it's a veritable masterpiece. essential if you want story, if you want gameplay, not so much.

@ Jeremy, whether or not they own NP, i doubt NP is going to treat a title as harshly as another game magazine would. they can't reach their target audience by comparing the graphics to an xbox/ps3 title, or they risk alienation of their readers (who don't own a ps3/xbox)

but eh. i haven't read it in years, so i can't really say for sure, but i would assume that's whats going on.

Agreed. There's definitely not much gameplay, but visual novels have their place too. And luckily the DS library has plenty of them (999, PW, Apollo Justice, Miles Edgeworth, Hotel Dusk, Theresia, Ghost Trick, some parts of Insecticide, LifeSigns, etc etc etc)....
