No save data transfer..

You can’t just transfer save data on its own but Nintendo made it so, if you physically have two switches, you can place them next to one another and transfer the save data from a game from a single USER’S account onto the other switch, essentially making the new switch your main console. But you have to physically have both consoles present and functional so, in the event that your first console broke and you wanted to transfer your save data, you’re out of luck (until they release those custom cloud saves :])
But you have to play the game on the old switch on your own Nintendo user or it won’t work.
I resold my old switch to get credit for the limited edition ACNH one and this is what I did to transfer my save data onto my boyfriend’s switch until the new console comes out and I can transfer it back onto my own switch.

edit: also goes without saying but I thought I’d nonetheless mention that once you transfer the save data to the new console, it’s erased in the other.

Except developers can prevent exactly that and based on the news this seems to also be the case here because it states "save data transfer between consoles won't be supported" in the article and picture. There are already 1 or 2 games where you cannot move your save data by this. Considering there will also be only one island per Switch the data is global for all profiles, so transferring is not that easy if you only move one profile because what about the other profile that are tied to the island but won't be moved?
While there apparently will be a backup option for your save, a direct transfer of save data between consoles will probably not be possible based on this info.

The switch is based on the wii and wii u, which as systems would save onto the console and not the disk. Understandably it sucks that you cant save on the cartridge, but it makes sense as the switch is primarily a console and not a handheld system, with games for consoles saving on said console and not on the game cartridges themselves.

Also i wouldn't worry about your switch breaking, mines been knocked to the floor plenty of times and its fine, but if your so worried about it being broken put it in a safe space and buy a sturdy travel case for it (mine is eevee themed :) ).

I'll be playing it in handheld only.
It's still a system and they could make games save to the cart if they wanted to.

And I do worry about it breaking.
I take the utmost care of things yet crap happens.

I went through three 3ds's in two years, not from neglect.

Charging ports fry, screens crack. Just life happens.

Another good read from there.

Soapbox: Confounded By The Animal Crossing: New Horizons Cloud Save Situation? You're Not Alone.

You playing in handheld is besides the point that primarily it is a console and saves like all other consoles on the market. And the switch Is a newer system then the 3ds and is less likely to break. Also, even if it saved onto the cartridge and not the console, you would still need to buy a new console to play it anyways???? So having this back save feature is a good thing given what we have (something is better then nothing)

the joycons do tho so I wouldn't recommend getting the switch lite

When I say it out loud it sounds insane.

I'm investing $600+ in a system that doesn't have an alternate backup, that when it breaks may not allow a system transfer, meaning possibly years of hard work put in to an island could be lost with no way to recover it, unless I pay nintendo a further $30 a year to 'maybe' have a way to do a system transfer.

Nintendo haven't come up with a permanent fix for joy con drift, so again, I'm investing in a console that isn't really finished, as so many people are sending their joy cons away, and people accept it as it's become the 'norm'.

It shouldn't be the norm.
Nintendo needs to really address these issues and come up with a permanent solution.

I won't get into autosave but it's not an endearing feature.

I have preordered the switch and
I'm just weighing the pros and cons and wondering in a real sense, if it is truly worth it.

It's like pre wedding jitters I suppose. (Not that I had them) but it's a huge commitment, and I'd be playing a game I've loved in the past, but my island could be lost when the console inevitably packs it in, because it saves on the console only.

There's still a month to go, so we'll see if anything positive comes from nintendo.

They take our money quickly, yet are slow to give anything back.

I've got plenty of room on my family plan if you'd like to jump on board. You just have to trust an Internet stranger with your email address.

Thank you for the kind offer! ^_^
I'm ok with paying the $30 a year, as long as nintendo bends a little, and gives us what should already be available options. :)
