alright boys and girls and gender-nonconforming folks, i need help with possible options for a new smartphone.

i've been a fan of the iphone for the past 7 years, but after seeing the direction apple's been going, plus the recent release of the iphone 7, i'm really not feeling the apple vibes anymore. along with the fact that iphones typically start slowing down after 2+ years (and macbooks, in my experience), i need something that..

  1. will last 2+ years without slowing down (i don't use many apps to begin with)
  2. isn't as pricey as apple
  3. fits nicely in my hand (don't wanna struggle with reaching my thumb to the other side of the phone)
  4. looks pretty (i'm a designer, this is important)
  5. useable under AT&T/Verizon

for reference, i'm currently using an iphone 5s. i've done a little research on my own in the past, but i'm still not exactly sure where to start. plus, if you have a non-apple smartphone, i'd like to hear your comments and critique about your experience with it. it'll help me make a decision.

note that i'm not going to actually buy a new smartphone in the near future, but i wanna know some good options for when the time comes.

samsung galaxy core prime/galaxy mini 5 is what ive used. it fits my small hands, i think it works pretty great, and is very durable. core primes are around 80$ and 5 minis are about 100-150$ range. i also had my 5 mini under at&t, unsure on verizon. if u dont have as small hands just go normal samsung galaxy tho. thats my advice

yea 7 looks terrible lmfao

I have a Moto X 2nd generation, and I think it's pretty great. I got it for about $300 on sale. It's resolution is surprisingly gorgeous and it's a pretty good size where I can reach my thumb across without too much trouble. That's my opinion though, but it has a lot of good reviews that I can agree with.

Moto X is definitely great. I have had my Gen one for over two years now and it's just starting to get little ticks and problems, that's why I am upgrading to the Moto Z Play ASAP, the Moto Z is pretty much on par with other "luxury" phones and it's only $400 for the play so I am going for it. I really like the camera on it and stuff and I've loved my Moto X the whole time I've had it.

And I have Verizon.

I'm liking the look of the new galaxy s7, not sure on the price of that where you but here it's quite pricey so maybe the Galaxy s6 edge? From what I've seen its slightly lower in price and I'm really liking the look of it. Can't give you too much of a review as I've never owned one myself, like you I've just been more inclined towards Apple, but it's wearing off now. Looking into switching to android and the s6 is probably where I'm going to go

I used to have a Sony xperia z(2), which lasted for ALMOST two years, but then I dropped it and my screen stopped working. Other than that, it was a great phone.
I now have a Samsung Galaxy s6 edge, which is great also: it's fast and very pretty. But maybe a bit too big for your taste c:

I recommend the Moto phones. They last long, have minimal preinstalled apps, get updates quicker than pretty much every manufacturer besides Google itself and last a long while. I personally use the Moto G4 Plus, but any of the new phones in the Moto G and X series are absolutely great.

If not that, Google Nexus phones are your best bet.

i've had a galaxy s6 since it came out and it works like new , they're going to release the s8 in the spring so the price is probably still going to go down further .

thank you guys for your replies!

i'm still welcoming recommendations from others that might want to contribute. :)

I had an iPhone 4, 3 years ago and I can confirm that iPhones slow down noticeably after 2 years, it's brutal.

Anyway, at the end of last year I was done with Apple phones. However, I didn't know any other options. I wanted a cheaper phone that was still decently recent so it could rhn well. I ended up with the Nexus 5. I love it sooo much! The white looks beautiful and slick too. ~ It runs well even still and it is from 2013 so I am amazed! I got it off Ebay for just under $200 so it was a steal!
