Not really proper text chat.

Wow, a lot of things I want to say.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but...

The text chat all of the websites are talking about is misleading. Apparently, Nintendo announced that they chickened out and went with a toontown-esque chat... You're going to have pre-set things to say, even to your friends. >_<

Nintendo's online play is somehow becoming less advanced than it was in 2006.

The point is that it severely limits the amount of interaction between players, the way I see it, there is hardly any difference between playing an AI opponent and an anonymous opponent who you can only talk with on a basic level. Only difference is that you may know the person, but you aren't really interacting with them too much outside the gameplay, and that is one of the main things that has made XBL and online console play so popular.

Nintendo really needs to modernize with online play. Microphones would be the most logical thing to do, however, they think that 1st time gamers wouldn't enjoy people owning them and trash talking them. I thought Nintendo was for everyone, not just 3 year olds and 83 year olds.
No... Nintendo is right, they wouldn't. However, there always should be a mute option or something similar.

Online gamers just need more integrity not to baste online newbs with trash talking.
Good luck with that plan.

Trash talking is the whole point of online chat. :|

lol. I still want voice chat.
I disagree, in Halo 3's ranked games and in CoD4, you cannot hear your opponents except during the pre and post game lobbies. The principal use should be strategizing or socializing.

Yeah that's the point. You're supposed to trash talk, it adds so much to the game. Also if you suck and you're a noob shouldn't you be playing single player? Once you become decent at the game then try multiplayer.
As I said, it's not. I know it's safe to say I have logged more hours in online multiplayer in the past two and a half years than anyone else here, and the point of voice chat is not to let off anger, and it shouldn't be.

I'd also like to point out to you that in many popular, online, non-*CEN-2.1-SORD* games games not made by Nintendo, the single player is much different than the online play. Granted it may have the same engine, but the goals are much different.

You don't realize that regular people don't have time to "train". You're talking about gamers that can actually devote some time to doing that.
I can assure you 100% that the only people who "train" to play online games either do it for fun or are pro players. Enjoying online competition is not something that you practice for.

I don't think we should really criticize them yet until we see what this pay-for-online thing is about. I have a feeling it will be like XBL. No FCs... yes chatting... etc. Kids can't pay... they are either old enough to do it themselves or have their parents do it, so it gets rid of any kid that Nintendo is trying to protect. Every kid on it would already have permission because their parent is paying for it. And they can't be sued.
Well, I don't think Nintendo would ever rely on parents to take responsibility for/attempt to protect their children. I think they would most likely put out parental controls, which is something every console with online play tries to do. Unfortunately some parents are either clueless about how to use them, or simply don't care. I think protecting younger players from the pretty bad stuff that can be said should be a top priority for Nintendo and for other online console play providers.

Also, I never heard about no pay-to-play service from Nintendo? ]

They could do what Halo 3 did. Have a mute button on players if they're trash-talking.

Nintendo should be deeply ashamed of themselves but not offering voice chat in friends matches, at the VERY least.
Mute trash talkers? Trash talkers are the only people who talk so if you would mute trash talkers there's no point in voice.

@Bul: Then it's not my fault they suck at multiplayer, get owned, and get trash talked. I'm just saying it can be easily avoided if you stick to single player until you're good enough for multiplayer. You can't complain if you go to multiplayer and suck. (However, in some games like MSC it's hard to train in single player because the AI is too easy or way too hard, but after 2 days if you train in multiplayer you'll be fine, well at least I was).
That's it, you're done. I don't know where you seem to have acquired all this knowledge about online play, or become so opinionated about people who have spent less time playing a game, but you really should quit while you're ahead.

Also, you're too short to be an *CEN-1.3-SORD* online.

Never argued that.

What I'm saying is that... well... let's look at an example situation.

We've got a complete gaming beginner who wants to try out Brawl online. For a moment, let's assume Brawl's got voice chat with strangers. The gaming beginner lands a trash talking pro as the opponent, and we all know how that scenario pans out.

Of course, as I said, this issue could be solved with a simple "mute" button, but I digress...

True, but most opponents don't disconnect on XBL because it will either count as a loss for them, or in the case of Halo 3, give them -1 EXP as opposed to 0 EXP if they lose the game without leaving.

Disconnection is not a problem, but games like MP:H's lack of punishment (that connection percentage was useless) made it one.

Uhh, even Mario Kart could match you based on skill level (albeit it didn't work well.) I'm confident, however, that a ranking system would solve the problem of mismatched players.

Also, people don't "trash talk" as much as SN says or you think.
