In fact, there is a way to determine which painting/sculpture is a counterfeit. Look at the differences closely, and you'll spot a fake without resorting to trials and errors.
For example, Jolly Painting isn't supposed to have a carrot nose, since the whole face is made of fruits.
 
There's no way to know if a painting is fake until you donate it.

Another way is when you get it, try to sell it to Lisa. If she gives you money, it's real. If she charges you, it's trash/fake.
