I've never really had it, but my dad's mom made really good fruit cake. If I remember my dad telling the story, my grandma would make a whole bunch of it and store in down in the basement for about a year and my dad says when he ate it the next year, it was wonderful he said. So homemade sounds a lot better. I may have to try it someday, if I can ask my grandpa for the recipe my grandmother had.
To be fair, I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with fruit-cake... I have to be in the mood for it, and at the moment, with a killer migraine and nausea, I’m not a big fan of fruit-cake right now. Even thinking of food makes me want to vomit... Anyways, on a good day, fruit-cake is always good with some warm fruit tea or milk! Preferably milk, as I’m not the biggest fan of tea... However, when I’m sick, I do enjoy a nice cup of peach tea :>
Not so sure on how good my favorite holiday beverage would pair up with fruit-cake... Hot cocoa and fruit-cake together? No thanks.
Most store bought fruitcake is kind of dense and nasty and better utilized as a doorstop rather than for eating. It's kind of expensive too.The best fruitcakes have more nuts and less of the weirder candied fruits. Most fruitcakes have candied fruit peels and candied pineapple and I think that gives it an odd flavor. My family has a recipe that uses only candied cherries plus dates and dried apricots and its's actually very good and I've never been a big fan of fruitcake.
i've never had it before but from what i've seen in stores, the little bit of red and green (?) cherries (???) don't look too appetizing. i don't i have a problem with having something added into a bread, like for example i like putting walnuts or chocolate chunks into homemade banana bread. for some reason i feel like the cherries look squishy to me o:
Honestly I love fruit cake. I've had it try and I've had it moist and there is a way to enjoy it either way (but don't eat dollar tree fruit cake you will regret it!)
While I agree those store bought fruitcakes are nasty but my grandma always made icebox fruitcake and it’s tasty... The ingredients are nilla wafers, graham crackers all crushed up, melted marshmallows and condensed milk, chopped up dried fruits and a ton of chopped Brazil nuts, pecans, walnuts and almonds all mixed up and smooshed into a loaf pan lined with wax paper and stuck in the fridge then sliced thinly once it’s chilled. I’ve never made it because everyone in my mom’s family does so why bother. They’re also crazy for Lane cake but it’s soaked in brandy or something and I don’t like alcohol but the amount of fruit and nuts in it are enough to call it a fruit cake. I love that Italian pannetone though.
