Pattern Designing

ok, now I'm just confused for how a camera would help with sharing designs. either on new leaf (unable to take a photo of the system's screen) or switch (system has to be docked for tv mode)

The game could probably still generate QR codes that could be shared that, with the use of some sort of app, could be scanned using the built-in phone camera by another player and then sent into their own game.

That's how I'd do it anyway. I'm sure Nintendo has some sort of workaround for this given how big a deal they made pattern sharing in New Leaf.

oh derp, I forgot about QR codes needing a camera to work somehow

though yeah, I suppose some sort of Android/iOS app that connects to the game will be the main solution if they keep QR codes

Someone in another thread mentioned the idea that QR codes could be scanned using the IR camera on the bottom of the right Joy-Con. I don't know how likely this is, and if the resolution and colour palette of designs was increased you'd need several codes per design (unless they just acted as a link to designs stored on Nintendo's servers, but then they'd be largely redundant), but seeing as QR codes are monochrome I can see that being feasible.

Well, they could use the phone's camera that's linked to a program that they make that's compatible with the Switch using the Nintendo network

It'll probably be through the Nintendo Switch Online app. Especially because this is a first party Nintendo game and they are planning to add more games aside from Splatoon 2 to it. Only game that's truly confirmed for it so far is Smash Bros. though.

I don't think the IR camera is accurate enough to scan the QR codes ACNL put out. Seeing as this is a new iteration on console I can imagine them being even more complicated now so unless they come up with a different output method, the IR camera is not an available solution.

Btw this is not some kinda estimate or something because through the Nintendo LABO kits there are various instances in which you can actually see what the camera sees, and it only detects specifically designed reflective surfaces. It's worth noting that the spots used in the kit are about a centimeter across and QR codes require a much higher precision to be scanned.

Well considering the fact that we didn't have to use a stylus when playing AC on the Gamecube or Wii, I think it'll be totally fine without one for the Switch. (But it'd be so nice if they did!) But that's only if they keep the canvas size 32x32 pixels. Imagine having even double that amount and, without a stylus, drawing on the canvas. It'd be a very tedious process and just impractical. Another con if they change the size is using the QR codes of other designs from different games. The codes of designs from other games may not turn out well.

Anyway, I can't wait to see what they decide to do! I don't really care to be honest because I know it'll be the best Animal Crossing game with so many new features!

Just one question: Will the resolusion of patterns be bigger this time? I mean, this is the first mainline AC game in HD and if you are going to make patterns for clothing and such, I think it's going to look a little too pixelated if you keep the old 32x32 style.

This. As much as I love the stylish limits of pixel grid clothes, I think this is going to be our first AC game with sharp textures, with the option to use a grid or zoom in for precision. I'm sure that no matter how HD the textures get, we can always find a way to emulate the look of older clothes designs, pixel by pixel.

Gonna bump this thread since people here talked about something like a Nintendo Switch stylus,
which is now going to be a real thing (announced in connection with Super Mario Maker 2).

So for those who are worried how to make designs without a stylus in AC Switch: Here is (maybe)
your solution for this problem!

Pretty cool! this is what was referring to back in February but no one noticed it apparently

Here's my quote
Well, the switch does respond to finger touches, so touch screen wouldn't be a problem... a stylist works, the one with those soft, yet hard nibs you see for cellphones (or any kinda rubberish area, not rubber eraser though), so even making a stylist with this in mind works as well
