About six months ago I believe, I got a new phone. It’s an iPhone 11 Pro if that helps. Over that time, I have not had literally any problems with the phone other than the fact that I cannot receive automated texts for some reason.

Something that confuses me is that when I am filling out something, like an online job application, for example it has an auto fill option for my phone number. However, the phone number that it auto fills is different from my actual phone number.

The phone number it auto fills is a number that I’ve had no affiliations with. I’ve never had it or used it.

Regarding the automatic texts issue, it occurs whenever I am prompted to request a one-time passcode for security reasons, for text disclosures with certain companies or a bank, etc. — Pretty much anything SMS/automatic texts.

I’m legit confused because I’ve never had this issue before and I’m thinking about going to my T-Mobile store which is my cell service.

Is this a simple fix or...? Thanks in advanced! I’m not great at technology!

I would really love to figure this out as I’ve needed to receive an SMS text for certain job applications, and it would severely limit me during job searches. I would appreciate any ideas.

With my current job, I’ve had to use a family member’s phone for my application because I couldn’t receive an automatic text.

Bump, ‘cause maybe posting this on my break at work on the night shift wasn’t wise with a lot of us sleeping. 😅

I could take a couple guesses! I'm not super positive because I've never had this particular problem but there are a couple basic things you could try...
1. Have you restarted your phone? (turn it off and on again)
2. Have you restarted your wireless network? (turn on Airplane mode, then turn it off)
3. Do you somehow have some numbers blocked on your phone? You can check this way:
Go to Settings > Messages. Under SMS/MMS, tap Blocked Contacts.

Of course you'll have to find some kind of text verification to test this with haha!

Edit:

So I've been doing some reading and I think this may be a somewhat common problem with T-Mobile that you'll have to call to solve.
You could definitely still check the things I mentioned, especially cause they're so easy!

But basically it looks like T-Mobile defaults to blocking texts from short codes (short codes are what the verifications come from - they are shorter than traditional phone numbers, usually 5 digits).
You can call T-Mobile and just tell them you believe short codes are being blocked and you've been missing very important verification messages and you need short codes to be unblocked.

Here is one summary, but honestly there is toooons of reports of this problem!

Strange one, never something I've come across before but it should be a simple fix. When you put the new number in it should come up to save it? that should overwrite the number, otherwise settings and saved forms or passwords will do it. Goodluck!

I’m glad I’m not the only one having this problem! Thanks for looking into it! I wasn’t able to find any information about this prior to asking. I’ll give them a call and see if I can have this changed!

have you tried turning off "filter unknown senders" under settings > messages.

it might be that you're receiving them but it's filtering them out. also in the messages app you should be able to hit the upper left corner to see message filters.

good luck
