This is my first time cycling villagers, can I skip to the sixth or do a little day by day? Can you take him on the fifth or does it have to be the sixth? Sorry, just don't want to screw this up for you.

You can skip straight to the sixth, and it has to be the sixth. To be safe, skip to the fifth, check if he is in boxes, and if he isn't, move to the sixth. That's what I do.
