omg I can't believe myself that I mistook these as ponytails. I'm so ashamed ;-;
oop I should have said that, SOL = source of light. You don't need a background for shading. Just determine before you start with coloring where the source of light (lamp, sun, whatever freaking produces light

) is. Of course you don't have to actually draw the sun or the lamp. Just imagine it and determine it. I always determine to put the sol on the right or left upper corner, depending in which direction the character stands. So for example, if you decide the sol is in the upper left, the right side of the face should be shaded and be darker, the left side of the face should be base color. For hair, you add some light reflexes on the left side for example. Hope this makes sense to ya @-@
Umm for the actual pigtails, do you have to include them? If no, I'd just leave it as it is!

Tbh I have not the least knowledge about paint and stuff. I NEVER in my life used these before, not even in art in school DX
I have this manga drawing book (is super old btw) and there was a tutorial at the end where they used colored crayons for for the outlines and I personally thought it looks superb, so I would recommend these instead of these markers you have there. wait a second let me get this dusty book.... ok this is gonna be a bit hard because the book is in german. I'll read through these pages concerning it and tell you what's important. If you want it to become really good, then you'll need to shade it.
If you're unsure if you will mess it up, you can trace it and try the shading stuff on the copy?
No problem, I really want to help people a bit this time

ok the holy book says:
- for thin lines make sure your crayons are sharpened
- trace the lines with stronger pressure
- where light falls on the lines (don't forget the sol stuff I told ya earlier) trace the lines with lighter pressure
- light reflexes can be produced through drawing lightly with the crayons and then erase but be careful not to blur
- in the book contrasting colors are used, not sure if you wanna do that. for example, the dress has purple outlines but base color is yellow and shaded is with red/orange.
- you don't necessarily need to make the outlines for skin in brown or similar colors. in the example here in that book the outlines for the face are in light pink for example.
- for the hair leave the part where light reflexes are plain white.
- where the dark/shaded area is, you can make the outlines thicker.
- add shadows behind single strokes of the hair to make it 3dimensional
- you should erase lines which seem wrong to you and try again
I wrote this probably in poor English because of translating but I hope this helps ya
and I just noticed since you asked for details in the hair. umm you basically just add little strokes...sorry I don't know how to explain this??? maybe take a look on my wip:
as you can see, the hair is constructed out of many thin strokes.
maybe you can try it like that?? I dunno, I'm so sorry ;-;
