Please tell me why this looks so bad

HOLY CRAP

because you are your own worst critic, honestly.
this is so so so good.

Ok but to be serious now...
I see that the mouth is slightly wonky. I recommend constantly "flipping" your drawing during the process (as in, mirroring the image) to make sure everything is symmetrical! It works wonders, trust me. And definitely take a break from looking at it.

Another HUGE tip is DONT COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHER ARTISTS!!!!!!! I quit drawing for so long because I felt inferior. So don't do that!!!

I really hope you finish this because it's SUPERB and I'd love to see the finished product ouo

I don't think she looks bad but it depends on what does she really look like in your mind. Right now I'm seeing someone who's not exactly youthful, perhaps matronly, someone who's unsure. There's a lot of shadow on her face and the fact that the hair is of a similar shade to the skin colour just pushes her back. You might want to change the hair style too if you want a more contemporary look. Proportion wise, the eyes are a little too big and the position of the mouth is a little off if you're going for a more realistic look.

oh boy everybody already offered so much good advice i've got nothing left to offer so here *throws compliments*

i LOOOOVE how you did the eyes and the shading on the cheekbones and browbones ; u ; i love me some nicely highlighted browbones bby

okay... I'm going to regret posting this because I'm not an artist and I probs look like an idiot.

I took cosmetology last year (it's something my high school offers, basically we drove over to the cosmetology classes of the college nearby and did makeup, kind of a waste because that's definitely not what I want to do) But I kind of contoured her face the way we did in that class....
though this is by a MAKEUP stand point, not at all an ARTIST stand point, so my little weird post may not even be valid, and I probably sound like an idiot. *stumbles*

from a makeup pov, the bridge of the nose and "T-zone" should always be the lightest part of the face. But since you are an artist, I'm sure you know a **** ton more about shading than I do.

but honestly, if I had commissioned this painting from you, I would of cried tears of joy because it's so beautiful. Don't be so hard on yourself because I'm seriously in awe.
