I’ve been playing ACNH for about two weeks now and was wondering what are considered “best practices” for preparing your island for visitors. Obviously I won’t leave things dropped on the ground, so they can’t steal anything. Is there anything else I should do ahead of time? I don’t have any plans for visitors right now, and I think most people (at least on these message boards) are very trustworthy.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Let's see...
If you don't want people to buy the limited stocked items at nook's cranny you should fence it off
Fence off orchards and farms so people don't harvest stuff
If you don't want your flowers to get ran over, try and fence off your flower areas too.
If you make people your "Best Friend" In-game that allows them to use a shovel and an axe so they can chop down your trees and such, therefore DO NOT make people you don't trust your best friend.
That's all I can think of.

If people come in wetsuits be careful. They can jump right into the ocean and go places you forgot to fence off.
If you have a money tree make sure to harvest it or fence it
always check they're feedback to make sure they are trustworthy
you can download an app on your real life phone to make chatting on acnh faster and smoother
good luck!

Pick up anything you consider valuable and put it in storage. You're unlikely to encounter this on well-moderated websites like belltreeforums and nookazon, but you never know. I've only really had it happen to me hosting on turnip exchange. If you do catch someone trying to steal from you or scam you, set your switch to sleep mode. It'll cause a connection error, it'll be like it never happened. DO NOT (-)-end the trade. It'll boot them, but whatever it is they took from you will in their inventory

Hope that helps!

*their. they're is a contraction of they are :)

Thank you all so much. Love the sleep mode idea, fencing off, and beware of wetsuits! I appreciate the advice.

Whoa... game changer. I did not know such an app existed for chatting. What is it called??

I think what was meant is something like discord or whatsapp.
No, they're talking about the Nintendo Online app for your actual phone. You download it and can access your in-game phone and use the keyboards/chat feature and repeat to the on your phone and it appears in-game. Just like if you had used the touch screen feature or slowly selected each letter with your joystick. It is a game changer!
