This hasn't been posted in since New Horizons came out, so I am thereby reviving this and adding in some pros and cons of New Horizons. I will also try to add more to the four preceding games that slipped my mind.

GAME CUBE
Pros:

  • The music has it's own charm
  • Exclusive Holidays like the Sports Fair and others
  • Villagers felt very-much "alive"
  • There was a optional for if you wanted to do a chore for a villager
  • Valise (I never had her, but I love the snooty and cranky kangaroos and she is gorgeous)

Cons:
  • The NORMALS were mean. Only the snooty and cranky should. The normal villagers are supposed to be sweet
  • You didn't really see a friendship being built.
  • VERY limited customization
  • You couldn't get rid of your hat.

WILD WORLD
Pros:

  • I love how villager pics were handled in here.
  • Snooties and Crankies still lived up to their name, but they still warm up to you unlike in GC.
  • Excusive holidays like bright nights and the flower fest.
  • This also goes for City Folk, since they are the same, but I LOVE the hourly tracks, they are my favorite in the series.

Cons:
  • Lots of villagers were absent
  • A lot of the real holidays were taking out like Christmas and Valentine's Day
  • You have to have Nookington's to get Shampoodle, which required someone to buy something from your store, which you cannot do anymore in Wild World, as the Wi-Fi got shut down
  • It is like a chore to keep dream villagers from moving out
  • THE LETTERS FROM MOM!!!! UGH!! -.-

CITY FOLK
Pros:

  • The city was a great addition
  • Ankha and Astrid came back
  • The graphics were pretty good

Cons:
  • They took out Villager Pics
  • The dialogue was EXTREMELY repetitive

NEW LEAF
Pros:

  • LOTS AND LOTS of new features
  • New bugs and fish
  • Holidays, events, and birthdays are a lot more in-depth
  • More villagers came back, including Velma
  • Lots of villagers, including Rooney and Walt, were introduced
  • New Villagers species (deer and hamsters)
  • The Snooties and Crankies act like mother figures and father figures respectively
  • There are a lot of indications of a friendship being built/a high friendship
  • Villagers give medicine to you for your bee stings

Cons:
  • The passing train when I have to go into main street
  • Villagers changing their mind about moving
  • Villagers asked for favors that required going to other towns
  • The "luck" mechanic
  • Villagers do feel "robotic" and repetitive
  • It can be frustrating just to track down a villager

NEW HORIZONS
Pros:

  • The graphics are absolutely gorgeous
  • You can place furniture outside
  • You can relocate buildings and even villager houses, THANK GOD
  • You can TERRAFORM
  • Even though I am in the northern hemisphere, I appreciate the Southern Hemisphere being added. The backwards seasons are a trip, and even the moon is flipped in terms of its illumination
  • More new critters were added
  • The museum got a glow-up and is absolutely beautiful
  • New flowers were added

Cons:
  • This game is missing a lot of characters and buildings.
  • I feel the game relies too much on crafting
  • Tools break, even the golden ones
  • The game forces you to obtain villager personalities in a certain order

this was really interesting to read through!
i made a pros and cons list for each game a while back for funsies so thought i would add it here lol (skipped city folk since it was so similar to wild world + i haven't played it in a while)

animal crossing gamecube

pros:
by far the best dialogue, can have up to 15 villagers, p good music, villagers frequently commit crimes against u, villagers feel like more well-rounded characters instead of 2d cutouts (jock villagers have more to talk about than just exercise, lazy villagers talk about more than naps and food, etc), being able to enter/turn on the lighthouse sometimes

cons: have to mail fossils 1 by 1 to get them back in the mail assessed the next day, can't place furniture outside, have to sell/donate items 1 by 1, limited design space, costs 300 bells per design, villagers frequently commit crimes against u (this is both a pro and a con to me lol), v little character customization, limited inventory space, can't switch quickly between tools

animal crossing wild world

pros:
best music!!!!!!, v good dialogue, unbreakable tools, villagers talk to each other frequently, villagers have changing interests that they will talk about, flea market, slingshot

cons: no item stacking/limited pocket space, worst graphics/frame rate, impossible to change hair without having someone visit, can't quickly switch between tools, can't place items outside, no decorative mode, have to donate fossils 1 by 1, costs 300 bells per design, lyle, all players share 1 house, can't have as many villagers, doesn't have as much stuff to do as the other games i feel like

animal crossing new leaf

pros:
beautiful town ordinance, unbreakable tools, flowers easy to move/remove, good music, more character customization than earlier games, island tours, short announcements only happen when there is news, mainstreet area, meow coupons, different special character camper every day, hide and seek with villagers, can mass assess fossils, current highest variety of items, currently has the most fruit varieties, playable island mini game, new personality types

cons: have to use face guide, hair guide needed, sliding scale for hair colors difficult to use, limited pocket space, items don't stack, 3k bells to change hair/eye color and can only do it once a day, stuck w face u start with, fishing is less forgiving, can't put furniture outside

animal crossing new horizons

pros:
customize character anytime for free (no guide needed), lots of pocket space, stackable items, design mode inside house, unlimited items on harv's island, being able to place items outside, much more design space, terraforming, very pretty graphics, designing patterns is free, can put items closer together than in older games, easier to catch fish/bug, best birthday celebration, by far the best museum in the series, by far the best for decorating (esp with the dlc)

cons: extremely repetitive dialogue (also rarely given response options compared to earlier games), villagers' personalities became v 2-dimensional, least interesting music in the series imo, no unbreakable tools, flowers time consuming to move/remove, crafting quickly becomes tedious, campsite visitors aren't super frequent, repetitive/pointless announcements, villagers rarely talk to each other, terraforming is clunky

bottom line - new horizons is definitely the best when it comes to graphics and decorating, but is sorely lacking in terms of dialogue and music
talking to my villagers was my favorite thing in the older games but i stopped talking to them entirely in this game w how repetitive/uninteresting the dialogue was

wild world was the first animal crossing game i played and has the best music and still has p good dialogue
city folk is overall a better experience between two from what i remember with the graphical upgrade and the addition is the city - the main big downside is that the wii controls are not the best imo

the gamecube version, while clunky, is still v charming and fun to play (especially if you play on an emulator with a save editor and hd textures)
i didn't play this one until later on but am having a lot of fun with it

I haven’t played much of WW but what was difficult for me to deal with is how blurry the graphics were. They are just so difficult to look at and there were other DS games that had 3D rendered graphics from around the same time that look much better like Phantom Hourglass.

NL’s biggest flaw for me is how you had no real control over who moved in or out.

NH I enjoyed the most but I wish making a large crashing waterfall was easier to do.

wild world.

pros — The drama. Rocco called me a very bad name before challenging me to a fishing competition. Bella and Rocco kept fighting, and then Bella took it out on me because I didn't deliver her carpet soon enough. Girl I couldn't, you were being all down in the dumps because Rocco said you had to shoot for smaller roles first.

cons — The graphics are certainly a set back compared to New Horizons and I can't see fish shadows most of the time. Making Bells is really hard unless you play a lot. It makes for a cozier experience, I suppose?
Shrunk is a thing.

new leaf.

pros — There's so many things to do in this game! I love how many shops there are, how many side quests your villagers give you. Our town really feel like our town when they suggest PWPs. Some of the furniture items are great and I wish they were available in New Horizons too. There's something cozy and unique about New Leaf that I fail to recreate in New Horizons. The music is great. The Zelda items are neat. Making Bells is super easy.

cons — Villagers moving out whenever they please. Villagers placing their house wherever they please. Definitely makes it hard to decorate and design. My flower hybrids and rare fruits? Yeah, goodbye. Random villager decided it's their land now.
Shrunk is also a thing in this game.

new horizons.

pros — Everyone is kind to me. I do love the drama and mean villagers from older games, but sometimes it's nice to be appreciated and reminded that I matter and am loved. No more moving out without my permission. Balloons and shaking trees provide us with a variety of items and clothing. Making Bells is easy. HHP and the ability to redecorate my villagers' houses. The fish, bugs and sea creatures look so good? The clothes are amazing too.

cons — If you don't come up with headcanons and backstories for your villagers, they're kind of flat. Micromanaging can get tiring and I often find myself having no idea what to do and where to start because the possibilities are endless. The music feels a bit lacking in comparison to New Leaf. I need a proper post office, the card stand is just sad.
