Question about Animal crossing and multiple Switches

Need help with some info relating to accounts.....

Right now my GF and I share 1 Switch, so we both have our own characters on our one island.

We are thinking about getting a 2nd Switch/2nd game.

If she signs onto the second Switch with her Nintendo account and starts animal crossing it will be as if she is starting from the beginning correct?
and her character on the original switches Island will still be there unless that save data is erased? Because she wants to be able to come and get all the things she's accumulated from our first Island on the original Switch.

Yes, her character on the original switch would remain as save data is not automatically transferred. She would be able to visit with her new character to get items just like any other visitor to your town.

Actually when NH came out, my husband and I shared one cartridge and had our own islands on our separate switches until we could afford a second copy of the game to play alongside each other.
