Question about star fragments

Two days ago, there was a meteor shower on my island. I made a lot of wishes, invited a friend over who made wishes too, but the next day there were only like 20 regular star fragments, no zodiac star fragments at all on both islands. I had old zodiac star fragments littering the beach, is it the reason? Is it like in New Leaf where you can't get more mushrooms in November if you are already using some as decorations? I time travelled and did it again but that time I hid all old fragments, the next day there were 8 zodiac star fragments, is it a coincidence or old fragments really affect the result?

For me, the old zodiac on the beach will affect the spawn rate if you already have some on the beach. I have some zodiac stars placed elsewhere on my island which doesn’t affect the spawn rate. I think it really is specifically of there are zodiacs on the beach
