I have a question for fans who started with New Horizons or Pocket Camp.

Have you listened to the hourly music for the earlier games? ie the original (population growing), wild world/city folk and new leaf?

As an older fan of the game, one of my biggest gripes is that the hourly music in New Horizons doesn’t hold a candle to the hourly music of previous iterations.

I am curious if you have taken the initiative to listen to the older music and your overall thoughts.

If you haven’t listened, I would truly recommend you it! Even minus the nostalgia, the hourly music for previous games is magical.

I've listen to NL music and I've started playing it. While I enjoy NL more, I can't say Iike it's music more. NH's music is better in my opinion.
NH's music wouldn't fit NL and vice versa. The games have different feels and I think the music emphasizes on that.

I haven't listened to the New Leaf music but I agree that the New Horizons music could be better. I wish we had choices for what we are listening to, like being able to turn off music or turn down the volume of it. I was looking for present balloons yesterday and couldn't hear them well; it was annoying.

I'm not a newer fan but not an older one as such either.
I started with new leaf shortly after it came out.
But I have played every main game in the series.

I think new horizons has the best soundtrack.

Wild world has higher highs than new horizons, but it also has lower lows.

New Leaf music was nice but very forgettable. Only 1am stood out to me.

And population growing was just weird.

Completely agree, it would be such a easy fix to just allow us to turn off hourly music for certain things. I play without the volume sometimes because I find the NH hourly music grating but I miss listening to the villagers and other sound effects.

I have heard some NL music, and I would rank it on par with NH. As the above posters mentioned, NH music has its highs and lows, and I wish we could have more control over it.

I actually think some of the best music in the game happens during the holidays, and wish we could hear it more than once a year.

Also, I am very happy that Kappn and Brewster’s themes will soon return to ACNH!

I’m not a newer player, I started with Wild World. I like the new leaf music the best, then followed by Wild World, and New horizons is my least favorite. I think the previous games had soothing calm music, whereas new horizons is more upbeat. I like the calmness of the older games.

I’m an older player. I started with the Gamecube version. I honestly haven’t paid too much attention to the soundtracks. I play with my volume down and listen to my own music. I must admit that Wild World’s soundtrack is pretty nostalgic for me. I remembered playing it religiously back in middle school. I’d always take my game to school and play it on the bus. The title screen and opening track brings back memories.

NH music is too loud and too busy a lot of times. I took a video of Fauna playing the harp and you can barely hear it over the background music.

The closing music of Nook's is more my style. It'd be great if we could turn down or mute the music.

I'm not a newer fan but I despise the NH soundtrack. There are so few that I like that it's made the game almost unenjoyable.
I've gone ahead and replaced the soundtrack of my game so now I enjoy it more.

Yes, I'm a new player that has heard music from all AC games. All games have good tracks. All games have a soundtrack that fits the "theme" of the game and I'd guess each one evokes a magical and cozy feeling when you're playing each game.

I do personally think that New Leaf is the weakest of all of AC games, but I'm not going to pretend it's not good because it's also good.

I am a new player and I do like the soundtrack of new horizons. It fits the game, which is a different game than new leaf. I remember finding it particularly charming when I had just begun the game and it was fresh and new to me. I find it generally soothing and pleasant to hear. nowadays i simply don’t think about the soundtrack much. I do generally play my game at a low volume, since I often play while watching tv, or simple don’t want to disturb my husband with the sound.I admit I do not have a very strong opinion on it. I do not play many video games and most games I play I tend to play on low or no sound, so I have not much to compare it to. But I enjoy it enough to actually play not on mute most of the time, which is a lot for me.

Honestly, I just don’t think there needs to be a sense of competition between the soundtracks. Fwiw I tried listening to snippets of the new leaf soundtrack and it sounds fine too. I’m sure if I ever play new leaf I would become fond of it, and probably it would be the same for other earlier games.

But I also don’t think my appreciation for the music has to be premised on the ability to compare it to other soundtracks in the series, any more than I feel like I have to play previous games to be a ‘real fan’

there’s nothing wrong with liking one soundtrack over the other, but there’s no virtue in it either. It is simply a matter of personal preference.

I'm an old player, but I personally enjoy the NH music. It's pretty nice and upbeat.

But I honestly have no memory of the music in previous games, and if/when a new one comes out, I won't remember the NH music either. When I first read the term "hourly music" my first thought was, "Oh, yah. I guess it does kind of change sometimes. I guess by the hour." TBH, I've never got why some people really, really enjoy it, or at least consider it important enough to be disappointed by. And the idea of listening to it for fun, while not playing the game, is just bizarre to me 😅 I mean, no offense of course, but I was shocked when I learned people actually do that. But to each their own! Frankly, music without lyrics tends to make me agitated in general. So I don't tend to care about video game music in general unless it's, like, absurdly obnoxious or something.

So. Yah. To me, ACNH music is just as good/bad as music in previous games. In that it's in the background, not unpleasant, but also doesn't stand out in any way to me.

Each to their own but this is an odd take to me, the music for the hour really sets the mood of the game for me. Like 9am is usually upbeat whereas 7pm gets more mellow and chill etc. Paying attention to the different hourly music tracks makes the game more immersive but if you don’t care for it or even notice the change then I guess that specific element of the game is lost on you and that’s not a bad thing. We all want/like different things.

I’m very aware it’s a matter of personal preference and I don’t get why people in this thread seem borderline offended that I’m creating a competition or something and that’s not my intention at all lol. The reason why I made this topic for new fans to check out the earlier music and give it a try. There are a lot of great musical tracks in the earlier titles and if people are interested in relaxing music to check out I would wholly recommend it. The widely accepted opinion in the fandom for veteran players is that the music in NH is weaker in comparison to the prior titles but obviously there is divergence from that opinion in the playerbase which is fine too.

I’m not a new player so I guess it’s fair to assume that I love NL’s music way more than NH. I like NH 5am music and that’s about it. :)

Older player here, I think all the games have good tracks and bad tracks. Each game has hourly music that fits them very well. I have favorite tracks from each game. My all time favorite will forever be the 1PM song from the original Animal Crossing because it has the cat meow. ❤

However... I also think there are a lot of boring tracks in each game. And I'm always very confused when people dunk on the NH soundtrack because it's not any worse than any of the other games? I don't think anyone is offended by people who think the NH soundtrack is weak. For me, I'm just really confused by the perception that it's weaker than the other games.

I think Wild World’s music for me is the most memorable and iconic while New Horizons are more catchy. Even though I still play New Leaf, I have a hard time remembering any of the tracks, which makes it the weakest for me.
