Recently finished my new island's catch up and I'm not to the current date and I currently have 8 villagers, with no open plots as the remaining plots have yet not been placed. Which leads me to my question:

If I were to visit someone's island, would I 'collect' any voided villagers? If so, if I were to place my ninth plot, would it be immediately claimed by the voided villager?

You can pick up a villager in your ‘void’. After you place the plot you will have one day during which the plot will be guaranteed to be free, then after that day it can be sold to either a random villager or a voided villager from someone else’s island.

I know people have had cases where it takes days for the plot to fill, but whether with voided villagers or ransoms, mine have always filled the next day (though to be fair I have only tried this maybe 3 times)

but you don’t have to have an open plot to pick up a villager in your move in queue as far as I know, and villagers can stay there a while.

it is also not only most recent move outs who you can pick up. My fauna moved out last July, and I started my second island in November. About a month ago I let an empty plot on the second island fill randomly, and it was the fauna from my old island!

Hope that helps!

Bah, so basically what I didn't want to happen will happen. I was hoping by not having a plot down, it wouldn't 'work,' and I wouldn't have to rush to avoid a voided villager from moving in... since lets be honest, when visiting folks on this forum board the voided villagers are likely going to be the low-tier undesirable ones. Not that it's a bad thing, just bleh. XD

I've definitely picked up voided characters, but so far every time it happened the game gave me 1 day (literally just the 1 day each time) with the house empty. If I didn't find a villager I wanted on an island by the end of the day that the plot opened up, then the next day the plot would be taken by someone (and from talking to them after they moved in, it was confirmed it was a void with the reference to the island of someone I had traded with online, so it obviously wasn't a random move-in).

I have this paranoia now every time someone moves out and desperately try to fill that house. That means that sometimes I end up with villagers that I end up taking as a "good enough" from an island, because they aren't terrible, even if they weren't who I was looking for. The upside is I've found other villagers I like this way, but the downside is sometimes I end up still not REALLY wanting them and I get frustrated while having to wait for them to ask to move out.

Move-ins/outs work better than previous games, IMO, but it's still not really to my preference. Honestly, I don't really like voided villagers as a concept at all because most likely they're not going to be interesting. I'd rather have a completely random villager, because at least it feels like you'd have a higher chance of getting someone you want. Also, I wish it was easier to get rid of villagers you don't like without amiibos or being lucky to have someone you like in the campsite.
