the only two functions that i can think of off the top of my head that are not featured in secondary blogs but are primary blogs are following, and sending asks. ask yourself: do you need these two features for an art blog? I don't see it common in them so i don't see why it wouldn't work to create a secondary blog for your art, but then again, if you just want to keep it completely separate then there's nothing wrong in making a new account!
I think making a side blog would be good. I have a lot of side blogs, and I mean A LOT, I am not active on like, any of them though XD I did have an active photography side blog for a good long while but I've been too busy to keep adding to my queue. I also have multiple themed side blogs which is nice when I want to post certain themed things I don't think would fit with my personal blog(which has become like 90% snakes anyways) It would be silly to make a whole new blog, it's easy to keep a side blog as long as you don't get confused by which blog you're posting to, because it saves that blog as your "active" posting to blog which is annoying cause I'll post on like my stim blog ONE thing and then reblog a bunch of things I wanted to post on my normal blog and they get posted to my side blog. :/
It really depends on what you'd like to do! If you post/reblog a lot of stuff on your main account, then having an art blog as a second account is good to keep things separate and tidy. This goes especially if you do commissions or plan on drawing a lot. I personally find it confusing and a little too overbearing when artists keep their art with their main tumblr since I'm just interested in their art instead of the content they post/reblog.
You can either:
a. Make a new account just for your art blog to keep things separate.
or
b. Make a sideblog (keep in mind you won't be able to follow with your sideblog, it'll always show up as your main blog; the same goes for asks)
So it all depends on how much you plan on using tumblr. Good luck!
I would just make a sideblog since it's a hassle keeping up with two separate accounts. With a sideblog it's way easier to switch between that and your main one to make posts and see your activity feed and stuff. Although if you feel like you need the option to send asks or follow people back from your art blog then you should make a new one.
sideblogs are better if youre just going to post stuff. you have a seperate ask box, but not sepererate likes, following and IM. but that shouldnt be a problem tbh
