looking for some opinions on a situation i have gotten myself in.

i have already reset my island twice. the first time was because i time traveled too much (for my own comfort) and wanted a fresh start. the second time i had a horrible map and didn’t want to wait for terraforming, but really, it was also due to time traveling.

now i want to reset again, for a third time. my big dilemma is that the game has been out over a week and if i reset without time traveling (getting from march 20 to current time) i will be much farther behind than the majority of the community, not to mention my partner and our friend that i play with almost daily.

but should i just do it anyway? its just a game but i got more upset than i would like to admit over how stressed it was making me. i feel like i am trying to speed run the game for no reason... i also feel pressured to play a certain way that doesn’t fit how i’ve always played these games. i think resetting would help, but i’m looking for opinions on what y’all would do in my shoes.

also, important note, if you time travel i do not care. i’m not saying time traveling as a play style is wrong or bad or anything like that. i just don’t think it’s meant for me in new horizons like it was in new leaf.

I almost reset my town because I hated my river so much and didn't realize it would take so long to unlock terraforming. Last night I caved in and TT'd to unlock it and now I love my island.

But if you're not going to TT then the best thing to keep in mind is that it doesn't matter if you're behind. You mentioned playing with other friends, so even if it takes you longer to unlock certain features at least you'll be able to visit their towns to mooch off their shops and whatnot. Plus since you already have experience with how the game works you'll also be able to do things in the optimal way.

I know how you feel.

I won't have the game until next week and I feel so behind, like I have to rush to catch up, but we don't have to rush.

Get the map you really want.

It's better to reset now, than to be a year into the game with a map you don't like. :)

that’s what i was thinking, too, regarding their stores. and yeah, if i reset another time i would absolutely swear off time traveling in large doses and would maybe make exceptions for sleeping in on sunday and missing daisy mae or skipping a couple hours to get an upgrade sooner.

It sounds so me like you're just going to continue to TT, a lot. You've done so twice, and it sounds like you might not be able to resist not doing so.

I don't think resetting is going to change what you keep doing and feel pressured to do.

I think you should take a brief sit down, figure out why you feel the need to TT, why you can't stop doing it, and what about it is hurting your town so much that you can't just take a deep breath, and effectively banish yourself from changing the time on the game.

If you are absolutely sure you're going to be able to resist doing so and you honestly feel your game is too damaged to recover from, then yes, reset. ( But realize that in doing so, you're putting yourself behind in multiple ways, and this is likely to make you want to do it again to catch up to where everyone else is, anyway. )

I myself wouldn't reset. I started the game saying I'm not gonna TT at all, blah blah. I found myself feeling limited, as I still work and I'm being pushed to give more and more time to work — I'm working 50 hrs regularly a week and they want more, so I wanted to get the most out of my game, and now I TT and hop back a lot in order to collect nook miles to go back and go to new islands with, or to move people in faster, or whatever else.

But we all play differently, have different reasons for how we feel and why.

Just account for yourself. Why do you do it, why do you think it's ruined your experience so thoroughly that a brief break won't fix it, and why do you think resetting will change it? Answering those questions should help you figure out what to do.

^^ i agree with what john said - it’s better to have a good map and be a little bit behind than to be all caught up and have a map that you dislike

there's terraforming now though which you could completely* alter your map btw and doesn't take a year to get

meanwhile, i'm actually considering resetting to get a better native fruit and change my island name ugh i should have gotten ugly starting villagers. but seeing old faces from my new leaf town, HOW COULD I????

*except the ocean

I reset my island on day 5 with 35+ hours because I realizes even with terraforming, it still can't change the ocean
mouth as terraforming is limited.

Resetting was the best decision I ever made as I got a dreamy (Fuchsia), Peaches, and the map layout
I wanted and now in a few hours from now will be day 3 and I have caught more fish and insects variety
than in my first playthrough. I have nearly a field of hybrid flowers, and non-native fruits that should spring
in a lot of bells.

However since you already reset, maybe the third time is the charm?

i think after most of these replies, i will end up resetting. maybe give myself a break and then get back into it. thanks everyone for your thoughts and opinions!

I'd say that there is nothing wrong with being behind everyone a little. The community is super supportive and not competitive so there is only help out there.

Over time things will balance out anyway, 2-3 months from now everyone will be in the same place and it will be about the creativity on each island not how far people have progressed. There will always be new players starting from scratch as well.

Plus if you make some good friends online sure they will let you visit their islands if you need to pick up any supplies, if you did reset.

There is no pressure to be anything in New Horizons, it's your experience trust your gut. Sometimes a new start is a good thing, and if you feel time travelling is not giving you the experience you want, create a little reminder something visual of how you felt the first couple of times.

I think if you're unhappy with what you've currently got, the go ahead and reset. Don't worry about being "behind" other people. Everyone plays at a different pace and, even if you are on track since the release, you'd still be behind everyone else that has TT'ed. Plus, the benefit of everyone else playing longer means there's more things on the market that you could make use of.

As with your friends, I don't think there's any sort of "detriment" to being in a different stage of the game. It wouldnt stop you from playing with them and vice versa.

Personally, if I really hated my island, I'd just restart.

I think it's fine to go back to the release date and progress until you're up to date with everyone else. But you shouldn't let yourself get this affected by time traveling. If you time traveled for a week, just stop doing it and start playing your game properly. No need to punish yourself or your island. If you're a perfectionist about these things, just give yourself a break and start playing properly when you feel like it's fair. A month from now it won't even matter anymore.

That's actually what I suggested to my friend because her partner started the town and it was going to be her game. The thing with this is, if you plan on only TT'ing to catch up, you might feel like you need to TT because the progression is a bit slow.

I just reset my game earlier and this is exactly what I'm doing! I set my time to the 20th and I'm going to progress while time traveling til I'm caught up to the 29th. I'm also a chronic time traveler trying to quit hehe
