Instead of abuse, befriending works best. Hitting them and making them fall into pitfalls doesn't help in the least D:

They put that in place after Wild World because people would abuse their villagers there and it encourages bullying, from what I understand.​

It's actually a common practice that doesn't work xD...

Talking to them is the best way. Also, if you get a ping from a villager you want to keep, tell the to stay, then time travel ahead 6 days, load the game. Save quit. Go back 6 days to original date and look for the pinger. Talk to everyone who doesn't ping until they tell you to leave them alone for a little bit. Someone will tell you if someone else is moving.

It takes a bit of time, but it works best.​
