Hi I'm Michael and I wanted to tell everyone this. Shops are worth opening.
Because I used to own a shop on an extra character until I closed it from lack of customers. It was fun running the shop with 1-14 customers per day, but when less and less customers came in I decided to close the shop because I only had 1 customer every 2 week.
I realized that I wasn't trying to promote my store, and if I promoted it I would be able to open it again. (Tips for a good store and pricing are below under spoiler it's pretty lengthy.)
Tactics That Can Be Used
Here's what I came up with for trying to promote my store.
#1 Put up a message on the billboard in a friend's town (ask first).
#2 Put a message on shop at (insert store name) now!
#3 Tell your friends about your store and tell them to spread the word.
Those are my top 3 tactics for promotion.
Know What You Are Selling
You must know what you are selling so you can determine the price.
For example: A Regal Table is reorderable, its common, so it's price is 3,900 bells.
If it's reorderable or not are 1 of the 2 things that's major to determining the price. Also It's rarity is the other. This is even more effective for what the price will be. Bamboo Grass is a perfect example of a rare item. It's can't be reordered and it's rare/impossible to find so 200,000-300,000 bells.
So you now know it's important to know what you're selling.
Sales, Treating Customers Properly, and backup stock
For when you're having a sale for whatever reason announce how
much of a discount it is. Also announce the day of the sale in advance to your customers. Also treat your customers with respect because it will encourage them to come back. If your a shop that is super busy I recommend having a back up stock so that you can have more customers and money. So do it.
Why You Should Open a Store
You should open a store because they're all the rage. People like to buy stuff they desire. So if you open a store you'll earn lots of bells and you'll be helping people get what they want. Also it's ok to talk with other store owners for tips on running a successful store. It can be stressful running a store so make sure to have store hours. Also my store type is a come to my town, buy what you like, pay, I give you the items, I say thanks come again, and end session when they're ready. Most stores on belltree are an open your gates, I'll give you the items, customer pays, and customer ends session. Its your choice on what type your store or it can be a combination.
