i?m getting bored of animal crossing and looking for a new 3ds game to play. i?ve never really played any pok?mon games except the free spin-offs (pok?mon shuffle etc).

i think that ultra sun & moon games are the latest pok?mon games...should i start off pok?mon with them? idk these games seem really popular and i?m interested. i don?t really know what goes on in pokemon, though

I would say the newest gen is probably always the best to start out in. That way you are learning the current meta instead of an outdated one. I would say Gen 7 is pretty good for beginners. There is enough challenge that you wouldn't just mindlessly destroy everything like you might in X and Y, but it's still easier than older gens.

I really loved Moon! And Ultra moon isn't much different than moon. I joined in the pokemon series at X which was difficult. But If you've never played pokemon, Ultra Moon or Sun would be a great starting point!~

Since it’s a sequel to Sun and Moon, I would say no. Since both games rely very heavily on plot, it would be better to start out on Sun and Moon or another game that strikes your fancy. Hope this helps!

On another note, the post game of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are less and less enjoyable the more games you haven’t played due to old characters coming back.

Yeah, get the latest ones rather than the OG sun and moon games. Better Pok?mon in general and better post-game story, in my opinion even though usum can be harder once you reach a certain point...

I would get it as being a fan of the series all my life, (i started out in 4th gen. But played a little 2 and 3rd gen before that.) id say go for it!

alright, i’ve decided to get ultra sun (i don’t think there’s a difference between sun and moon? idk)

thanks for the help everyone. excited to get into a new series! (whatever you call it) :lemon:

Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon aren’t sequels to Sun and Moon, they’re set in alternste universes... Whether or not you’ve played Sun and Moon won’t affect your experience with a Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon at all.

I admit, I've only gotten half way into Sun, but ended up picking up Ultra Moon just a few days ago (was a b-day gift). What are the major differences? I couldn't get too invested in Sun for some odd reason and I'm hoping I don't hit that with Ultra Moon.

I'm sorry to say this, but if you cannot get invested in Sun or Moon, you probably will not make it far in Ultra Sun and/or Ultra Moon. I would suggest, if you're new to Pok?mon, with Diamond/Pearl/Platinum. The difficulty is nice, they can be played on the 3DS, and the Champion, Cynthia, (at the end) is difficult to beat. It would also prepare you for Pok?mon Switch, in case Gen 4 Remakes are coming up in Gen 8.

I've been playing Pokemon since it first came out a long time ago. So I don't know, I think I've just reached the age where I still want to play Pokemon but I can't relate to the main character considering she's a what? 10 year old girl? *sigh* And you're probably right, I only pick up UM every now and then and play for half an hour at a time.

Ultra Sun and Moon were, imo, really geared towards hardcore fans of the series. Not much is different between them and Vanilla Sun and Moon. The main benefits from getting them are a few pokemon not available in vanilla SuMo, move tutors, new exclusive egg moves (strength sap vileplume comes to mind), etc.

Basically, if you're a casual looking for something cool in the main story, I'd recommend playing X and Y. SuMo and Ultra are good, have a decent story, and get a ton of mechanics down right, but are frankly way too hand-holdy. Ultra is def a bit harder than Vanilla. If you're wanting to be current gen but don't care about story and only want after game content/competitive value in a game, get Ultra.

Edit: I also forgot that with pokemon switch coming out either late this year or early next year, it may be a good time to wait on getting a new pokemon game if you have a switch or are getting one in the near future.
