Somewhere it was stated that Illumination, the studio behind the Minions movies, is going to reboot the Shrek series. Is this real?

I never heard of this, but I hope it’s not true. Shrek doesn’t need anymore movies.

In fact, Shrek is a prime example of how sequels of an animated film are trash.

The second one has one of the better covers of "I need a Hero" I've heard.

Aspect ratio is a tad wonky:

Illumination studios were so preoccupied with whether or not they could make a Shrek reboot, they never stopped to think if they should

Good on DreamWorks for passing it to someone so they don't have to deal with it for a bit.
As to why? It's money, probably.

This is absolute blasphemy and I can’t abide by it

I actually liked Shrek 2 but I didn't really find the series that fun. I was probably too old watching those anyway.

dreamworks was actually bought out by disney, fun fact.

Also it's a cash grab. the first shrek was an anti love letter after one of the heads of disney left back in the 90s. that's why we got two cg movies about ants, and why every part of the original shrek was the opposite of what disney would do.

in any case, I enjoy the first two, I'm not interested in a reboot

I didn't know that. Makes sense, the first Shrek was a big middle finger to Disney.

hoo boy. I won't get too detailed, but basically the guy that created dreamworks specifically made it to spite disney because during the production of "a bugs life" his ideas kept getting shot down. it's some corporate tea that spilt and I love it.
