For some reason in the older games, the boy player was actually wearing long socks in GameCube and Wild World like girl character, not exposing their legs which looked kinda weird in my opinion. It was changed to normal ankle socks in City Folk and back to long socks (except in a different colour) in New Leaf when you start with your boy character.
I always thought it was kinda weird-looking, yet stylish and fashionable. For me, I always wondered there was something under their shoes because they never took them off until New Leaf.
