I just found this post on another forum, and didn't find a topic on it here. It reads:
My nookingtons got downgraded, i'm not sure its because of time traveling though. Once I was asked by nook whether "Variety, Balance, Hours or Not much" would bring more customers in, and I chose balance, then about a week later he downgraded to nookway, so i'm guessing these four options determine the store once you've reached nookingtons. Just a hypothesis though.
Then someone else came up with:
Hmm....interesting, that makes sense. Hours would fit Nook 'N' Go, Variety would leave it at Nookingtons, and Not much would be Nooks Cranny be process of elimination. Interesting...
Then the OP replied:
I was thinking the same thing Trumpet. He asked me on "December 11th" after going in and out of his store every day for a while and not buying anything ( I was looking for point day so I could get that super cool Midna cap :D)

So it seems that if you go into Nook's often without buying something after he becomes Nookingtons, he may downgrade? It's quite a hard choice, whether to choose variety over hours.

I also suppose after he downgrades, he wouldn't upgrade again through bells, just the question again.

I don't get it.. Like I get the concept, but what do the Choices mean?

I would go for hours...

you can always buy stuff from others, for a price, but you can sell fish a lot more.

Wow, well, that's interesting to say the least. I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with the shop being downgraded after working to get it up there.

It also explains why the hours actually get worse as he upgrades.

According to the above quotes, the choices would most likely be:
Variety: Nookingtons
Balance: Nookway
Hours: Nook 'n Go
Not much: Nooks Cranny
( I don't see why anyone would want to downgrade to Nook's Cranny, though. :p )

If people didnt time travel we could get an accurate synopsis of this, but we'll get one when someone reaches this point legitimately.
I've heard rumors of him downgrading due to time travel, so thats possible too.

I'm going to not play until Monday and see if he asks me the question.

Maybe he upgrades to get more business this time?

So, what if you just don't play for a while? Wouldn't it downgrade then, aswell? I'm not quite sure the game can actually tell if you've TT'd or not.

It would make senseif he downgrades when a player TT because the player is probably the biggest buyer in the game;(villagers "supposedly" buy items now too) So you dont play for a long time, Nook sales are down, can't afford the big store he has so he downgrades. I would choose variety.

Variety beats hours, since people probably shouldn't be playing at 1:00 AM anyway. What is there even to do?

They do. Gloria bought something at Nook's shop a couple days ago (but I can't spell it :p)

Lol, if nook is open till 1am then theres pretty much the same stuff to do as during the day, true 1am is a little on the late side, but 9pm is way too early. besides, some people (like me) have work during the day and only get to play at night some days, and I dont like missing out on what was in Nook's that day.

Its all a matter of personal preference I guess.

Oh this just brings something entirely different to spin the wheel of when the hell nook upgrades.
