I personally was never a fan of Discord. It had next to no notifications so I would forget about the app constantly and return to see thousands of messages that I missed. It also tended to delete old messages after a certain amount, so if you were away for a day you missed a whole conversation or other important thing. The call system was bizarre seeing as calls were always ongoing and one miss-click would have you go live to everyone. I also found it very hard to PM/connect with other members and it didn't seem to have the ability to easily remove someone when something got out of hand. The text was also so tiny that it was hard on my already poor eyesight. Above all else, it drained my battery like nobody's business.

I've had to use Discord twice for two different Splatoon squads and deleted it the second I left. Discord is more for competitive gaming, not for friends who enjoy playing together every once in a while.
