I don't mind this.
I don't expect people I'm randomly matched with to be worth talking to in the first place...Yano, unless I like hearing children talk about the non existent sexual acts they performed with my mother and screaming because they died.
I would rather stick forks in my ears.
Just use Skype or something.but seriously, as long as I can voice chat with friends I don't mind

I don't mind there not being voice chat, exactly for the reason Tao mentioned. It's also not that surprising to me, seeing as MK8's microphone support consisted entirely of you only being able to speak in lobbies. I think Nintendo doesn't want the game to be saturated with audio streams which can possibly, in some rare cases, if you have a bad connection, cause some lag.
Here's hoping for some neat Splatoon amiibo.
People like Jav might say inappro-pro things to the kids.
I've been ridiculously excited for this ever since the first mention and trailer. I, for one, have never been a big fan of shooter games, since pretty much all of them seemed to be centered around military settings and using dull earthy colors, relying on things like headshots to take out other players, full of blood and blowing people up, obviously marketed toward males/men, and generally just very unappealing, in my honest opinion. And it frustrated me to heck that almost all shooters were just like that.
Then Nintendo came out with Splatoon and it's like the breath of heavenly air that I've been waiting for. Finally a shooter with some personality, bright colors, interesting and imaginative characters and concepts, plenty of multiplayer action, and it's fun and lighthearted. I couldn't have asked for more and I can't wait for it to be released.[/QUOTE
I agree 100% with this. Wish I could've thumbed up more. This is exactly what make this game awesome; it's actually different.
So, Splatoon won't support any voice chat, yet the game could heavily benefit from the GamePad's microphone. They've missed a real big opportunity, as it's kinda inconvenient having a laptop with Skype (or any voice chat app) installed in it and taking up a portion of Internet's bandwidth.

Their voice chat system is notoriously awful from my experience, though. Have you ever tried it out? I did with Mario Kart 8. It's almost impossible to understand what the other person is saying half the time and there was an extreme amount of static and feedback. I can see why they dropped it for Splatoon.
What they should really do is try to make a voice integration system that actually works well. I'm sure their problems stem from the fact that Nintendo's user base is HUGE, though. There's already lag problems with games like Super Smash Bros. And with Splatoon running at a smooth 60FPS with online play, they probably couldn't risk it.
All things considered, there's still the Skype/Voice chat option via other outlets. It's a little inconvenient, but still a lot of fun. To avoid the extra internet bandwidth, just have someone who is NOT streaming or doesn't mind the added burden host the call. Does wonders, trust me. : )
