I love shiny hunting in the newer games like Sword and Shield, but I will never deny that it's definitely not as rare or as rewarding. I really want to get shiny Pokemon that I can say I slaved over the DS for lol. The thing is, I know it's definitely not as easy, especially with the odds being about 1/8000, which is ROUGH. The good thing is that the 3DS has soft-resetting, and my Platinum and SoulSilver games open me up to a ton of legendaries I want! I got shiny Mewtwo by resetting back in Let's Go, but that's the closest experience I have to SR hunting.

Nonetheless, I'm tempted to try. Has anyone does this in Gen 4 or earlier, and if so, did you have any success? Would you say it was worth it?

Go for it. It only took me about 40 hours of resetting to get shiny Kyogre in HGSS and it’s the most rewarding shiny I have. I plan on doing it again for Drifloon for when I play Pearl...

I wouldn’t do it. While the resulting shinys might be more “rare”, I’d find the tedium too much to bear (and this is coming from someone who likes foraging for pinecones in NH!) Also, unless you go through several generations of bumping up your mons and pumping them with bottle caps/mints, they’re not going to be the most practical mons if you actually battle.

It's not so much for battles; I would just like to collect shinies that I've never had the opportunity to catch before. I do some battles online, but for DS games, I don't plan on even bothering with natures and IVs. That's only stuff I worry about in later games.

Nice! If I truly decide to take the plunge, I plan on trying it in Soul Silver first probably with the starters, since the chances are technically increased since I'm checking three Pokemon instead of one (I'll take whichever is shiny, I don't care).

Ah, alright then.

If you find that it’s more rewarding to reset for a shiny pre Gen VI,I’d say go for it. I just prefer the better odds of post Gen V. I haven’t even gotten a wild legendary yet since I prefer methods of finding normal mons like the masuda method (the only legendary i really actively hunted was Latias in UM, but I haven’t found her yet. Maybe I should go for her again...)

Yeah if the odds would've been that easy from the start, I would've just gone for it with later games! But I can't explain it, and it's probably because I have played with my older cartridges for over a year, but I've never had the chance of getting a shiny in earlier games aside from Red Gyarados and it really makes me want to try.

I also just like the colour and personality of the older sprites more, so that could be another reason why I prefer to try it :)

i would absolutely recommend starting with the johto starters! it was my first pre gen 6 shiny hunt, and it only took me about 1000 SR to get a shiny chikorita! i feel like that type of hunt would be the best way to ease yourself into the older gen's shiny odds, since it has the fastest SR (since you don't have to enter a battle) on top of better odds, like you said. good luck if you decide to do it!

That’s exactly why I was thinking of doing it first! Thank you so much :D I know I’ll definitely drive myself crazy, but I feel like that’s all part of the fun!
