If you drag it out too much people will lose interest, unless you have a good technique of dragging it out. I'm not sure how you plan to do this story, but depending on how it ends and how long you want it to go for, you could 1) drag it out, though the police might get involved eventually, or idk, or 2) carry on, but then make a twist that makes it last longer, like a stage 2 or something.

I dunno though, depends on how your story is going In my story Ink Blade you'll find that detours aren't acceptable as there's a form of race going on, but that doesn't mean I'm not squeezing in a few as I go. I think it all depends on how your story's escalation speed is at and what it needs to be at.

I'd say then try to throw a twist and turn in there somewhere to drag it out a little (or just drag it out) without it seemed... well, just that; "dragged out." Again, I don't know how you can since I don't know your plan, but I'm sure you could find a way. c:
