Storage doesn't work with items on it?

So I had a trophy and a sunflower on top of my rococo dresser, and I couldn't get into it. I removed the sunflower, and the drawer opened again. Repeat. Is this a fluke or do all storage containers do this?

it just makes it hard to open it, go for the middle.
