Strange Villager Move-in Issue

So I'm stumped. I had a weird thing happen that I can't figure out...figured I'd ask.

I had someone move out recently and I unfortunately got too busy IRL and didn't grab the villager I wanted from the campsite, so a random villager moved in. They said there were from my wife's island, which she confirmed. I didn't know this was a thing, but looked it up so I'm good there. Makes sense.

A while later my wife had someone move out of her island and a random villager moved in. This villager said they were from MY island. Problem is...I've never seen that villager in my life. Didn't even know it was a villager. They've never lived on my island or even been to my campsite. My wife and I have only ever visited each other, no one else. I have no idea why that villager said they came from my island.

Does this make sense to anyone? It's obviously not game breaking, but I just can't get it out of my head. So strange.

I actually had this happen once, too
My guess is that it is one of two things; either it just chose a random friend's name (in this case, yours) to claim that they were from there, possibly to make it more... immersive? than just saying "Hello, I randomly decided to move here" lol
OR it meant to send a villager from your void, but it glitched somewhere in between and sent the wrong villager

But since it doesn't seem to cause much issue (didn't for me, either), then it's probably nothing to worry about

Ok…well….Renee is a liar!

I figured it was something like that. It was just awkward because I was sitting right next to her when it happened. She said “Oh thanks, that villager you didn’t want moved into my town. Great.”. I said “Wait, that clown sheep donkey thing?” No, it was someone I’d never even seen before.

I feel like if that were the case we would had been seeing a lot more discussion and topics arising during launch and following its early months with people freaking out about lying/squatting villagers.

The game goofing somehow seems more likely because I haven't heard this happening too much. Like only enough times to count it on one hand from here and other places.

@CL4P-L3K You should try to do what Stikki suggested and talk to the lying villager and see if they act like they recognize you. Tell us how that goes to. I'm kind of interested to be honest lol.
