I can?t comment on the single player aspect, since I?ve only played it with friends so far, but here are my thoughts. I went into the game with somewhat high expectations - I wasn?t expecting a miracle, but I was expecting a lot more than Mario Party
Let?s Go For A Drive 9 & 10 offered. And I?ve actually enjoyed it quite a bit so far! Here are my thoughts on the modes I?ve played so far (which is far from all of them - there?s quite a few).
Mario Party Mode: This mode was a bit of a letdown for me overall. I really like how each character has their own dice block they can roll - it makes picking a character more strategic, and encourages you to switch out your characters often. For my first game, I picked Bowser Jr., since he was my favourite playable character, and quickly discovered I hated his special dice. So now I?m rotating through different characters to see how they play.
The minigames are really fun. They make good use of all of the functionality of the joy cons without going into gimicky territory. One of my favourite minigames involves feeling the difference in rumble between different characters performing actions (e.g., a bob-omb blowing up and a thwomp falling). Though they seem to favour 4-v-4 and 1-v-3 minigames over 2-v-2 - I?ve played three or four games and only come across one 2-v-2 minigame so far. Also, maybe I?m just petty, but why do the people that lose still get coins?!
The ally system is... interesting. I personally think it?s a little bit overpowered, since by landing on a random space, you get to use their special dice, they add to your dice roll, and they can help you in certain minigames. Someone without any allies doesn?t stand a chance against someone with three or four allies. It is a really fun mechanic... but only when you?re winning.
My biggest beef with Mario Party Mode is that it just feels simplistic. There are only four boards to choose from, and all of the boards are quite small. Since the map is so small, when the star moves, it doesn?t move far, so it?s not uncommon for the same player to get two or three stars in a row simply because the star continuously ended up in their path. They have a good selection of items, but I was low-key hoping the space items from Mario Party 6 & 7 would make a reappearance. They have a few fun event spaces, but there are only a couple of different events per board. It?s plenty fun, and for someone who?s only experienced the more recent Mario Party games, it?s fine, but as a long time Mario Party player, I can?t help but miss the complexity of the maps from previous games.
River Survival Mode: This is probably my favourite mode so far. It was really really fun! I love co-op games, so this was right up my alley. It?s not too long and the minigames are simple but engaging. The high-five mechanic gets old really fast, but it?s still fun.
My only note is that since it?s a co-op game, make sure you have three friends to play with or you set the CPU?s difficulty to a high setting. Otherwise, the CPUs will screw you over by their inability to do anything.
Sound Stage Mode: This one was also very fun. Each player gets an independent score, so you could definitely play this one alone! It?s a quick game but definitely one you could do over and over (we did, haha). Just don?t overextend your elbow and wreck your arm like I did, kids. Apparently I?m eighty years old.
All in all, pretty fun. It seems like they focused on making every mode good instead of making one mode exceptional, which I can appreciate. And there?s still a bunch I haven?t tried yet, so I?ll have to see how those are in the coming weeks...
