So it has been heavily rumoured by WSJ that late next year we will in fact be getting a hardware revision for the Switch. This doesn't come straight from Ninty and it probably won't for a while, but this sort of comes as a shock for me as I didn't think there would be a revision for a while! I will be buying a regular Switch around Black Friday though, as I'm awaiting a decent price and there will likely be games I want out way before the revision happens.

There isn't much information just yet about what the revision entails but apparently the screen is coming into question. Personally I'll be bummed if the screen gets bigger for the revision as I would like a bigger screen very much... But I want quick access to games more. XD

I may actually be interested in buying a revision as my current model, which is from release, has some wear due to long term use. Joy Cons are apparently very fragile. They just slide off without me having to press the release button. Also, this means that when playing in handheld mode the controllers continuously desync because of them sliding off. It's not a huge problem but it's still annoying. This has only been with one of my three sets of Joy Con but it has made me uncomfortable using them in fear of breaking anything.

So if a revision means ironing out the flaws the system currently has, I'll probably be interested in buying it :)

I was waiting to by a Switch until November because all I really need is Smash Ultimate, but with this info in mind, I may wait. Also, school is really busy right now, so I wouldn't have much time to play it anyways.

I have a Wii U and I wanted a Switch for Christmas, but my family is also kind of tight on money at the moment. Because I have a Wii U though and still have games to catch up on, I’ll probably wait to get the revision version knowing this information. I’ll have a lot more of my own money by then and will be able to just buy it myself. :)

I had heard talk that this was likely going to occur a few weeks back. The guy who, at the time, was making the claim apparently didn't have a particularly good record of being correct so most people seemed to disregard it. I'd been feeling like it was going to happen regardless of whether it was next year or the year after that, so I'm not all that surprised. This is the company that gave us, what, 6 variations of the 2DS and 3DS?

This leaves me in a difficult position. I had been planning to get a Switch in the next couple months so that I could play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at or around its launch, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses a few months after that when it comes out. Now I feel like it would probably be an awful decision and a waste of money since I've seen no shortage of reports of people's Switches experiencing wear and tear, Switches running hot and the plastic melting and cracking, and Joy-Cons being kind of terrible. As much as I want to be able to play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as soon as possible, I might just have to wait a year until this next version comes out, assuming the rumor is true.

If it is true, it's kind of frustrating that they'd wait until after people purchases Switches for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or the Let's Go! Pok?mon games to say anything about it. Considering how faulty Switches seem to be, it just seems moneygrubby to me. Understandable because it's a business and they want to make as much as possible, but disappointing and irritating nonetheless.

At the same time, if they hope to keep third party companies interested in making ports of their games for the Switch, this was going to have to be an inevitability. If they didn't improve some things over time then the Switch would definitely have just been another Wii U, albeit a far more popular one.

I personally don't know what to do now.

I'm not that surprised about a revision, this is the company that constantly reiterated it's handhelds (Game Boy - Game Boy Color, Advance - SP - Micro, DS - DS Lite - DSi - DSi XL, 3DS - 3DS XL - 2DS - new 3DS etc). I can't imagine that whatever this iteration is major, more DS to DS Lite where maybe the screen is better and better battery life. They're not looking to upset their current base just yet after all, better to make a small jump before a larger one where games might play better on a new one.

I want: changeable backplates like the standard edition New 3DS, a dock design that’s less prone to scratching the console, a glass screen and updated joycons with a d-pad and analog triggers

But that’s just wishful thinking...

Better battery. I can't even get 2 hours out of it playing Hyrule Warriors.

I still don't actually have a Switch, but I'm not really surprised about the battery life issues with the current model, although I hadn't heard too many complaints about it until it came time to discuss the revision. It's fine for me since I am perfectly able to lie in bed while having the system charging from nearby, and I don't really plan on using the system too much outside of the house (or docked), but I still am bothered by the screen size. A lot of people are theorising that the bezel might be made a little smaller to fit a bigger display. The only reason I'm a little bothered by the screen size without even owning or having seen a Switch up close in person is because I love the way Pocket Camp looks on my Nexus 7 tablet and was hoping the Switch screen would be about the same size, but alas it is a bit smaller. At least the resolution is better than the Wii U GamePad screen, which is what I played most of my Wii and Wii U games on exclusively, and always did notice the picture quality was not so great. It's sooo frustrating to know that we will probably get AC before the revision, without even knowing what the revision will entail until after it has released. xD I need that game on day one, so the revision is kind of out of the question for me even having the gripes that I already have.

I'm really happy with my current Switch - I had one incident where it got really hot and the fans were going crazy when it was in sleep mode in its case, but other than that, I haven't had any issues. I don't think I would get a new Switch unless the revisions are significant.

However, if they release an Animal Crossing-themed Switch, and it happens to be the 'revised' one, I don't know if I'll be able to resist... :p

Yeah, if the revision Switch ends up being the AC-themed one, I’ll definitely be getting that. I hadn’t considered the possibility that that could happen, but at this point it looks like I’ll be getting the revision either way.
