I read today that while the Switch 2 is backwards compatible, Nintendo also said that not all games playable on the Switch will be playable on the Switch 2. They didn’t specify which games will be playable and which games will not.

What’s your opinion on this. What games do you hope are playable on both the Switch and Switch 2?

I've seen some people mention that it might just be referring to things like Ring Fit Adventure and Nintendo Labo not being compatible due to things like the larger size of the new joy-cons, so that's what I'm hoping

I'm expecting it to be very few games that aren't backwards compatible, probably the ones that use the IR sensor in the Joy Cons like Ring Fit Adventure, Labo, and 1-2 Switch. I'm hoping just about everything else will be okay

It'd be a poor move on their part if it was anything other than just accessory focused games that won't be compatible. I imagine Ring Fit will get a Switch 2 re-iteration anyway - wasn't it a huge success?

Depending on 'how many' are not backwards compatible, this could be a deal breaker for me.

I have most of the major switch games. I don't want to reinvest.

I think it may just be them covering themselves incase there are issues, but it also could be about them picking and choosing what games will be brought over to the Switch2 library. Or maybe it has something to do with the cartridges.

One game I hope is compatible for Switch 2 is Super Mario 3D All Stars. The reason why I worry about it being incompatible was because the game was based on an emulator rather than being full-on remakes.

basically expecting this, plus maybe a few outliers for nothing more than weird technical reasons, because backwards compatibility is typically more complex than it seems. which could add another layer to the incompatability disclaimer, with it both talking about ones that aren't due to system specific reasons as well as just weird coding nonsense

simply put, "if it doesnt work, well we warned you"

I wouldn't stress over it. Sony put out the same warning with the PS5, and in the end only 7 PS4 games turned out to be incompatible.

Yeah, like what others mentioned, I'd imagine the games that require IR sensors such as the Ring Fit and Labo won't be compatible. A successor to Ring Fit could easily be made, however. Remember when they were so popular that they were nearly impossible to get for a short period? I never jumped on that hype train, but it must be a good workout device.

If I'm not mistaken, it was stated somewhere that New Horizons and almost every Nintendo-developed game would be backwards compatible. I'd expect some games that use some form of 3rd-party accessory or device in general won't be compatible, and that list isn't large anyways.

I'm assuming this means 99% of Switch 1 games will work just fine for Switch 2. Anything requiring special equipment like Labo might have issues or not be compatible at all. But let's see, maybe Nintendo will surprise us and a larger portion of the library won't have backwards compatibility.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the IR games are compatible via syncing an original Joy-Con.
Was that confirmed at all? I know you're not required to attach the controllers to a console for them to work, but that could be an interesting scenario for those games if it's possible.

Just a theory. That’s how the Switch Lite handles it, and I don’t see a reason for not being able to connect them.

Probably just games most of us on here never touched. At least I'm hoping.

Like everyone else said, it’s probably just going to be a small amount of games that are super niche anyway and most people don’t even have, like Ring Fit or 1-2 Switch.
