Surgery? Have you had one?

Hmmm depends on what’s considered surgery. I was put all the way under for my wisdom teeth at 17. At 28 I had to have my tubes tied. At 41, I had 2 procedures where they put me under to put a steroid injection in my spine and then a couple of months later I had my c7 disc replaced.

I had a few. 10 I believe. Some were repeated which is why it's numerous. 3 of them didnt help which were scopes. 5 are what kept my hearing, set of tubes2x, set of patching and an emergency patching set and an additional emergency patch. And the removal of tonsils and wisdom teeth.

my wisdom teeth surgery is the only one i’ve had (that i can remember anyway LOL)… i’m such a baby when it comes to things like this; they absolutely had to put me fully under for the whole thing TT

When I was 1 and a half I burnt my finger on an iron (down to the bone) mum thought it was tissue but she (mum) cleaned it so well I didn’t lose my finger. I now have a skin graft which they took from underneath my right arm❤️

I need some reassurance, please.

I searched "surgery" and found this thread. I have questions for anyone who has had a hernia surgery! Is the recovery bad?

I visited my primary care provider, and she said... basically... "you need surgery, it's too big, you can die from it, a hernia is considered an emergency situation"....

Then she said... "a surgeon will be calling you in 7-10 days".

I don't know about you all, but after the talk about emergency and death... will I live the next 7-10 days? 😆

Assuming I live, is the recovery painful? I live alone... will I be able to move around? The internet has given me such a wide spectrum of answers on this question, that I don't know how to prepare!

When I was 18 or 19, I got my wisdom teeth removed.

There's more, but it's too personal. More personal than my wisdom teeth and it happened before that.

I've only had one major surgery, when I had a serious knee injury at 18 y.o. in late December 2017. my patella actually broke into two pieces, and ligaments/muscles were torn. that recovery took about five months 😮‍💨 but obviously I'm okay now, you wouldn't even be able to tell I had a serious injury unless you looked at my left knee and saw the absolutely massive scar running from top to bottom.

besides that, I have two more procedures planned, but I don't know yet when they will happen. hopefully within the next few years.

i had my tonsils removed when i was a kid, and then all four wisdom teeth when i was a teenager.

Yes, for my tonsils and adenoids when I was a kid, and also to get my wisdom teeth removed.

Forgot to mention on this, I broke my left wrist clean in half when I was younger. Long story short I was on my bathroom counter trying to wash my foot or leg, and I fell off and landed right on top of it to break my fall. Thankfully it was a clean break though and didn't require surgery. Probably why I didn't mention it in my first post, lol.

Both of my lower legs. I had a caste afterwards, and then after it healed the other leg. It wasn't fun. I had to get one done again in high-school too.

I had to get mouth surgery that was the the most painful after effect I've ever had to endure. Then my side.

I just had abdominal surgery in October. It was not only my first surgery but also my first stay in a hospital. I was terrified going into it. However, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The pain really didn't bother me all that much, especially after I got home and was able to rest and make myself more comfortable. I'd still prefer to never have surgery again. 😅

I need some reassurance, please.

* I am not a medical professional so please take all of this as my own experience. It may not be applicable to you.

I haven't had hernia surgery, but based on my recent abdominal surgery the recovery wasn't that bad as long as I followed the rules my surgeon gave me and didn't try to push myself too hard. There are different ways they can perform the surgery and mine was the most invasive, requiring a vertical incision that went from above my belly button all the way down. As a result, I had one of the longest recovery times (6-8 weeks). I'm still not 100% after 8 weeks, but I can perform most daily functions without pain.

My biggest restrictions were: (yours could vary)
- Don't lift anything over 10 pounds.
- Don't drive until off pain meds and able to hit the brakes without pain.
- No strenuous exercise. Walking regularly was recommended, but nothing else.
- I wasn't able to bend down or reach up too far. They recommended I put everything I needed between waist and shoulder height.

All of this is to say, that if you plan ahead you can probably get by for the most part. Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, you'll probably be able to walk around a bit before they release you from the hospital. You will have to take things easy for a while, though. The first 2 weeks was the roughest for me; I was able to get up and about but everything exhausted me. After 2 weeks, things gradually became easier.

Each person's experience is different, but if you have a good surgeon, they should walk you through everything and answer all of your questions and concerns. Wishing you the best of luck!

My mum has had surgery for a hernia, though it was quite a few years ago. (Saying this, because medication and better solutions in surgery are different to when she had it.) (Also, we're from UK, so may have different aspects.)
It is best to get information via doctors when you have it, as they should inform you what to do and not to do.

The 7-10 days may be for them to go over your details, take samples and inform you and reassure you what will happen.
Since you haven't had it yet, the same as when you do have it, do not over strain yourself in anything.

You will be able to move around, but it won't be as painless. As it is a proper surgery.
In the first few weeks, again do not over strain, even shopping can be problematic if you're holding so many items. Careful with bending down as well.

For me, I haven't had a surgery before. There was almost a chance I was going to have surgery on my foot that is deformed.
Back when I was a teenager, I had this sort of talk with several doctors, but due to the fact that they didn't know the outcome of what would happen to my foot, I declined it.
My mum felt like it shouldn't been decided years prior to that, and I sorta agree. I can walk fine, it's just needed to wear special shoes, and needing a rest every so often. Since my bones aren't positioned like they are in my left foot.

I’ve only had a couple surgeries in my life, one to take my appendix out when I was four, and my wisdom teeth out in my teens. What about you? Have you had any surgeries?
You had your appendix out that young?! OMG. I had mine out at twelve and it was terrible! Idk how you managed the pain being so little!

I'm pretty sure I had my appendix removed but I don't remember at all. Also wisdom tooth extraction in recent years. That's it.
Even getting hit by a car just led to me getting stitches, I don't know whether that's good or not.

I was that kid without their two front teeth lol

Got them removed when they grew in due to some dental problems, but they were genetic as one of my siblings had the same problem when they were small. It's kinda funny because now my front teeth are about half a centimetre longer that the rest of my teeth. I also got some other tooth removed due to rot, but idk which one. Do these count as surgeries? Tbh idk

I did get my one wisdom tooth removed when I was like 19 years old or almost 19. I needed to get it removed because it was impacted and because I was getting braces put on so I needed to make sure there was nothing that could effect the braces. The next surgery I had was an eye surgery for my Strabismus (cross-eyed), they originally only thought one of my eyes was the issue but noticed there was huge muscle tightness in the other eye so that eye also needed to be worked on as well.

Those are the only two surgeries I've had. They weren't too scary.
