I'm not sure. It hasn't happened to me so idk what the details are but it could honestly be a combination of both. I heard they might've taken too many orders.
I haven’t heard of this happening but that’s really unfortunate if so, especially since stores (around me at least) actually got stock of the console that weren’t from pre-orders. I didn’t pre-order mine but I got one day of release with no problem really.
I'm sorry to hear this. Definitely sympathize with how upsetting this is. I hope it's just issues with shipping and/or they're able to figure out their stock to still come through for those affected.
It would be really crappy if they sold so many in store on release day but screwed up their preorder customers.

This is very unfortunate, I'm sorry to anybody this has happened to so far. A lot of stores seem to be selling way more consoles than they actually have, and it's kinda bizarre that it keeps happening. I had no idea that the console was gonna be this popular so I'm very grateful that I got mine when I did.
To anyone here who's still waiting for their console to be shipped, I wish you the best of luck.
I have a feeling they will continue to restock them due to their crazy high demand, so if you haven't gotten one yet just keep your eye out!

That stinks. You might want to check Brickseek to see if there's a store near you that has any in stock. There's actually a Walmart that's in reasonable driving distance of me that supposedly has a few.

Amazon restocks a couple every hour or so, but they're gone faster than I can get them in my cart. I think at this point there's no hope in finding one for retail price before the game's out. Switches in general are low in stock, and it's possible non-essential stores like Gamestop might start closing up because of COVID-19.
I don't have a Switch at all (this is actually my first console since the 3DS) so I'm a bit conflicted on what to do. I definitely care more about playing the game than having the LE switch, but dang if I didn't want both.

Couldn't tell ya. When I caught them in stock, they came up as backordered, and said they weren't shipping until the 21st. It's likely cancelled preorder "slots" or something.

I didn’t pre-order a special edition console, but went to Walmart on Friday and they just had some in stock. The first employees mistakingly told me that the shipment never came in, but another costumer who was more intelligent than I pressed them to get someone from electronics to verify, and they had some!
In fact, I went by yesterday, and they had seven consoles in stock still. Not sure why anyone’s pre-order would get cancelled while someone like me who never pre-ordered it already has one. Such a shame. But I suppose this whole coronavirus thing is messing up a lot of stuff. Still sad, though.
