Mafia TBT Mafia General Thread 4.0

I may create a rough draft of a potential game for me to host in the future (I feel I could be a very willing host compared to actually playing), though I want to substitute killing for a way less violent alternative as it'll likely involve AC characters. Could I deviate from that in any way or does it have to remain strictly "mafia kills town"?

you could make it like a survival show and kick them off the island if they get voted?

Doesn't have to be kill at all.

I've seen a lot of games where the voted or night killed players were just disqualified or removed from the game. (E.g., paintball imposter game where the people are "out" because they got hit by paint. The votes are people agreeing whose fault they think it was and pelting them with paintballs to disqualify them.)

The only requirement is to create a flavour where the people removed are either disqualified or otherwise prevented from participating. (Survivor island is another alternative style. The limit is up to your imagination on how to craft such an environment.)

One thing I had in mind involves the characters riding on a cross-country train rather than being on an island. There are thieves on board, and in order for them to steal and keep loot, they must invade the innocent riders' sleeper cabins while they sleep, open their personal emergency door, push them out, and dip. Doing it all at once would raise eyebrows, which is why mafia would do it one rider per night. It is the job of all the riders to figure out who the mafia is, and once someone is voted off, the corrupt conductor tosses them from the train. Tossing wouldn't kill anyone, but since it's a train that doesn't stop, ejected players are simply left behind with no way to catch back up (unless they have a hidden random role of some sort which isn't revealed until after ejection). It's a rough description, but it could work without resorting to killing.

If I can't think of anything good, I may just stick with the traditional "mafia kills" approach, but use a different set of characters from another series or theme. Killing would definitely not work with AC characters. That's super wrong.

@oath2order ran that one. Not sure if he will update it ever again. TBT mafia has been revived more times than flappy bird.

What, the thread or wiki?
The wiki. Correct me if I am misremembering and if you bring it back edit my page to say "Geoni is a player of TBT mafia who is always mafia. Kill him on site if you encounter him in your game."

oh the wiki is missing, it got deleted for being inactive too long i think

I think I have an idea in mind! It'll involve four of Redd's shady "cousins" alongside the other town folk together on a developed island, much like what is seen in New Horizons. Instead of killing, it'll involve once-a-night house robberies, where high-valued items are stolen and villagers are kidnapped and taken to an unknown location aboard Redd's boat. Suspected villagers among the island populace are voted to get exiled from the island, sent to the police headquarters in the city over 3,000 miles away, and the specific villager's visa burned on the spot due to DAL policy.

You've got some of the traditional extra roles such as:
  • Ringleader: Performing the crime and leaving no trace, while appearing town-aligned the entire time (see exception for Katrina's Deliverer of Luck hidden role).
  • Master of Disguise: Performing the crime whilst disguised as someone else.
  • Hacker: Blocks a target's town role from being performed.

  • Volunteer Investigator: Investigates players to see if they are criminals or simply innocent.
  • Watcher: Taps into a specific villager's home security cameras to watch criminal movement.
  • Locksmith: Temporarily barricade all windows and doors of a villager's house from the inside, protecting them against a burglary and kidnapping.
I would also include two hidden roles for the town:

Hidden for upcoming mafia game

Would this be cool? Any thoughts or suggestions?

  • Locksmith: Temporarily barricade all windows and doors of a villager's house from the inside, protecting them against a burglary and kidnapping.
I would also include two hidden roles for the town:
  • Katrina's Deliverer of Luck: Temporarily boost a chosen player's role luck for one night, if any. Targeted player will be informed that they were given good luck for the night, though it is not revealed to the deliverer whether or not their target has a role or is aligned one side over the other. Pick wisely, as this role can only be used once for the entire game! Immune to the Hacker.
    • Ringleader Boost: Ability to perform two robberies and kidnappings in one night.
    • Master of Disguise Boost: Completely immune to watcher for themselves; also appears town-aligned for the Volunteer Investigator.
    • Hacker Boost: Blocks all town roles from being performed.
    • Volunteer Investigator Boost: Ability to see target as criminal if said target is a ringleader.
    • Watcher Boost: Ability to watch two players' camera systems at the same time.
    • Locksmith Boost: Ability to barricade two houses.
    • Useless against vanilla townies, the other deliverer and the vanilla criminal.
  • Katrina's Deliverer of Bad Luck: Temporarily reduces a target's role luck for one night, but some don't completely prevent them from performing their role unlike the Hacker. Like the other deliverer, the targeted player will be informed if they were struck with bad luck, but nothing is revealed to the aid. Pick wisely, as this role can only be used once for the entire game! Immune to the Hacker.
    • Ringleader Bad Luck: Their attempt to kidnap will go awry and fail, also informing the targeted townie in the process via PM.
    • Master of Disguise Bad Luck: The disguise falls apart mid-heist, creating a chance for the Watcher to see their movements if targeted.
    • Hacker Bad Luck: Their computer fails, preventing them from blocking anyone.
    • Volunteer Investigator Bad Luck: The report of their target will always come back town, regardless of alignment or role.
    • Watcher Bad Luck: Their computer fails, preventing them from watching anyone.
    • Locksmith Bad Luck: The temporary barricade built for their target will fail, letting criminals steal and kidnap their target with ease.
    • Useless against vanilla townies, the other deliverer and the vanilla criminal.

Maybe this setup can be modified with how many players end up joining, but this seems unique and fun!

Oh yeah, the Katrina roles can probably be removed if there's less players than expected. Nonetheless, I think I'm going to go forward with this shortly after your game ends. I'd love to be able to host.

I think after my game I’d give it a couple of weeks (burnout and all), but happy to join
Well, yeah, of course. I wouldn't plan on making the signup thread for at least two weeks. Your game pretty much burned everyone out! 😭

I think having the excitement and enthusiasm to host is 80% of the battle and the rest of the battle is keeping up and making sure it's balanced. I think 17 players and adding a mafia goon to that would provide a balance but see how many people sign up and adjust the power roles accordingly. I think your theme is fun and the chaos of the Katrina roles seems entertaining! I think these first two games reviving mafia are going very well and look forward to watching all these new (and amazing) players to TBT mafia!

I’m interested in hosting next, but I’m thinking I won’t pursue that until about a month from now around mid July. I have a cool theme in mind and a few setup ideas but it’s hard to gauge how many people would sign up.

Judging from how many players signed up for mine, maybe it's best we wait another month before announcing another game. I don't even plan on hosting another one on TBT for at least six months. Maybe late July for yours would work? I'm taking into consideration school schedules and the like.

Yeah this tends to happen, we get the band back together every several years and then things get quiet again

I’m craving to host a Darkest Dungeon themed game though
