“Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.”
- Arthur C. Clarke
Extraterrestrial life forms are threatening our planet and its people. Destruction and abductions are occurring at ever increasing rates. No one is safe. Their goal and why they chose us is currently unknown, but the chaos must be stopped. Across the world governments have united to form XCOM, a paramilitary organisation with the most adept soldiers, scientists, and intelligence analysts. These talented individuals are working hard to combat the alien threat as best they can, as well as enhancing our own technology through research of alien weaponry and autopsies on any salvaged alien corpses.
However, this is not the only threat to the safety of the Earth. EXALT, a human undercover paramilitary society also wish to disrupt XCOM's work and acquire alien technology for their own sadistic gain. They take delight in allowing alien experimentation on humans to continue – they sympathise with the aliens and harbour transhumanist ideals. They welcome the aliens as a way to evolve mankind, whereas most fear them. EXALT will do what they can to deceive and manipulate anyone who gets in their way; they are dangerous and must be stopped.
Originally, XCOM had a goal to protect all humans. This does not stand any more - all hostile lifeforms must be eliminated if there is to be any hope left for this planet.
Mafia is a game of the uninformed majority versus the informed minority. In this game, players are divided into three different teams: XCOM, Aliens, and EXALT. The Aliens will work together and be aware of each others roles (apart from the Chryssalid), and EXALT will work together and be aware of each others roles. Players among XCOM will not be told about the roles of any other players, only their own. To compensate for this, there are many more XCOM Players than the other two parties combined.
Be warned - Mafia requires a time commitment. This generally depends on the player, but a minimum of 30 minutes per day of effort is required. Mafia requires a great deal of reading. Most people are actually quite poor at reading comprehension and playing Mafia is a great way to improve your reading ability, as well as your writing and ability to think and argue logically.

Roles
Please note that not all of the roles listed here are in the game. However, all possible roles are mentioned - there will be no 'hidden roles'. Some roles are unique, but not all of them. Only one team can win the game and there will be no draws - working together with another team provides no gain for you.
XCOM
XCOM must eliminate all hostile lifeforms to save planet Earth. They win the game if all of the Aliens and EXALT members are eradicated. Possible roles are as follows:
XCOM Rookie (Townie)
Recently employed at the XCOM headquarters, you still have a lot to learn until you can become a fully fledged soldier on the field. You have no special abilities other than your voice, use it wisely.
Central (Unlynchable/Recruiter)
You are the junior commander of XCOM. Due to your ranking and being held in high regard, you are unlynchable. Once per day phase you can PM the host requesting for an XCOM Rookie to be promoted to an undercover agent. During the following night, the undercover agent will infiltrate the EXALT headquarters. There are four possible outcomes of this (25% chance for each to occur):
- The undercover agent kills a random member of EXALT.
- EXALT kill the undercover agent.
- The undercover agent betrays XCOM and joins EXALT as an EXALT Rookie.
- The undercover agent returns to the XCOM headquarters with information regarding a corpse that was sanitised by an EXALT Medic.
Dr. Vahlen (Researcher)
You are the chief scientist of the XCOM project. You are an astrobiologist by profession, and take great interest in adapting alien technology to biologically enhance mankind. With the discovery of the alien material “meld”, you have developed the ability to carry out gene modification surgery on players to improve and enhance particular skills. Each genetic modification costs two meld. One meld is acquired each time an Alien or member of EXALT is killed. Some gene mods require an alien autopsy to unlock. Dr. Vahlen can carry out autopsies during the day phase on available corpses, and carry out gene modification surgery during the night (subject to meeting the meld cost and autopsy requirements). Players cannot have more than one genetic modification, and MEC Troopers cannot be modified due to lacking biological material. You cannot genetically modify yourself.
Genetic modifications:
Brain – Neural Enhancement – Allows a Psionic Soldier to be able to determine full role names rather than just alignment due to enhancing their psionic gift. If used on Annette Durand this will also allow her to see if actions are used on the player she chooses to watch, instead of just if the player uses an action themselves. If this gene mod is given to any other players it will do nothing.
Chest – Secondary Heart – If you are targeted for a kill, you will only become critically wounded instead of bleeding out right away due to a bonus blood supply from two hearts. This keeps you alive for an extra day and night cycle before you bleed out completely. If you are lynched you will still die as normal. Requires a Cyberdisc autopsy to unlock.
Skin – Bioelectric Skin – Your skin can sense hidden enemies due to static changes when they approach you. This grants immunity to strangulation by Seekers. Requires a Chryssalid Autopsy to unlock.
Dr. Shen (Engineer)
You are the lead engineer of the XCOM project, and are responsible for overseeing manufacturing of equipment and construction of base facilities. Once per day you may craft a Plasma Pistol, Carapace Armour, Medikit, or Arc Thrower, and distribute these to a player of your choice for use during the night. The Plasma Pistol allows the player to shoot another player of their choice, but be aware that you cannot use the gun AND another night action. The Carapace Armour grants immunity from embryo implants from a Chryssalid for the whole game (providing an embryo has not already been implanted from previous nights - Carapace Armour does not remove it). The Medikit will protect you from death if you are targeted for a kill during the night. The Arc Thrower can be used to roleblock another player. You can only craft one of each item in the game, and you cannot give an item to yourself.
XCOM Assault (Jailer)
The Assault class is an aggressive close combat specialist. If majority is reached with a no lynch vote during the day, they can capture a player of their choice to interrogate during the night. The interrogated player will be roleblocked, but also protected from actions (including the Chryssalid). The player that they will capture must be PMed to the host during the day before majority is reached. During the night the XCOM Assault and the captured player can talk as much or as little as they like. The XCOM Assault can then at any point during the night ##VOTE: End Meeting, or ##VOTE: Kill (in the provided chat), to spare or kill the subject. The XCOM Assault can only kill twice during the game, but can continue to capture players to interrogate them if they wish. The XCOM Assault is anonymous to the captured player, but they may still pick up clues if you have a certain writing style. It is advisable to write in caps locks whilst interrogating a player, and check carefully for any spelling or grammar mistakes that may give you away.
XCOM Heavy (Suppressor)
The Heavy class specialises in dealing damage via the use of explosives, but they are also able to suppress their target using their machine gun. Once per game during the night phase you can suppress a target player. If the player is using a night action, they must take cover to protect themselves. This stops them from carrying out the intended action. If the suppressed player does not use a night action, they will die instead.
XCOM Sniper (X-Shot Vigilante)
The Sniper class is very talented at providing long range and accurate killing power. XCOM Snipers have a limited number of shots that they will be informed of at the start of the game. Each night they have the option to use one of these shots on a player. If the player is protected by any healing role, the shot will be refunded.
XCOM Medic (Doctor)
The Medic class is proficient in healing fellow soldiers on the field. Once per night you can offer protection and healing to a player. If that player is targeted by a killing action, you will stabilise them to ensure their survival. You cannot heal the same target twice in a row, and you may only heal yourself once per game should you choose to do so.
MEC Trooper (Veteran)
You have undergone some of the greatest sacrifices to be who you are today. Dr. Shen designed a Mechanised Exoskeleton Cybersuit (MEC) for you using the alien material “meld”. During your augmentation in the Cybernetics Lab, you underwent heavy amputations leaving little more than your torso and head to keep your central nervous system for control and your heart for blood flow. From this base all of the robotic adjustments were added and fused with your remaining biological material. As you are now more robotic than biological, this gives you two night lives.
Psionic Soldier (Detective)
You are an XCOM recruit that was gifted with strong will, enabling you to use psionic powers just like some of the Aliens. As a result of this, you are able to inspect a player each night to discover their alignment (XCOM, Aliens, or EXALT). You cannot inspect the same player twice in a row.
Annette Durand (Watcher)
You are a human civilian harnessing incredibly strong latent psionic abilities. Originally held in custody by EXALT to take advantage of your natural psionic talent, XCOM has saved you and you have agreed to assist them. Each night you can PM the host the name of a player. You will be able to see if they use an action on another player, and learn the name of the player that has been targeted. You cannot watch the same player twice in a row.
Shaojie Zhang (Jack of All Trades/Self-Aware Miller)
You were formerly a member of the Triad criminal organisation and reached out to XCOM as you were in possession of a “unique” alien technology. After cooperating with XCOM, you agreed to assist them in missions due to your many talents. During the night you can choose to use one of three actions: shoot a player, protect a player, and investigate a player. You are able to protect yourself. Once you have used up all three skills, you cannot use them again. You're a jack of all trades, master of none. As you were initially aligned with the Triad criminal organisation, you will show as a member of EXALT to any inspections (or EXALT Operative should the Psionic Soldier have the Neural Enhancement genetic modification).
Aliens
All of the Alien roles listed below are able to send in KP, apart from the Chryssalid. Should the Chryssalid be the last Alien member standing, then they can send in KP. The Aliens win the game if they equal or outnumber XCOM and EXALT. Possible roles are as follows:
Uber Ethereal (Godfather)
The Uber Ethereal has an atrophied body, yet is kept alive by its supreme mental capabilities. It's brain is tremendously well-developed, and thus they are the masters of psionic abilities. As you are able to intercept thoughts with your superior psionic powers, you will return as XCOM to Psionic Soldier inspections. You must discuss a name of a role you wish to return as should a Psionic Soldier receive a Neural Enhancement genetic modification, and the host will provide you with a blue role that is not in the game. If you are captured by an XCOM Assault and spared, you will be able to discover the name of the player.
Sectoid (Mafia Goon)
Sectoids are cowardly and frail aliens. Although they possess impressive psionic abilities, the Uber Ethereal describes them as “ultimately useless” for the purpose of finding a “perfect specimen”. You have no abilities apart from the use of your voice.
Sectoid Commander (Mind Controller)
A superior version of a Sectoid with highly impressive mind linkage capabilities. Once per night phase they can choose a target to mind control, and decide which player the mind controlled player uses their action on instead of the one they originally chose (if applicable). The mind controlled player will be informed of this when they receive the result from their action – they are aware of their actions but cannot control them.
Thin Man (Framer)
Exceptionally intelligent and loyal, the Thin Man is highly adaptable to the needs of the Ethereals despite their flaws. As the Thin Man is the most humanoid looking alien that is invading the earth, they can frame other players and make them show up as an Alien (or a Sectoid with Neural Enhancement) to an investigation.
Muton (Veteran)
Mutons possess a “rare strength” and are easily controlled. However, they are incapable of individual brilliance, and behave very primitively and without independence. This makes them disappointing to the Ethereals, but their great strength offer a bonus and provides two night lives.
Seeker (Roleblocker)
Seekers are robotic – they were built and not discovered. They have the ability to cloak themselves and appear invisible to the naked human eye, allowing them to stealthily reach a player and enclose them in their tentacles. During the night, the Seeker can choose a target to wrap it's tentacles around, thus preventing them from using any actions during that night.
Cyberdisc (Mugger)
Cyberdiscs are mysterious entities – it unknown whether they are robotic creations, or if they are living bio-mechanical organisms. They have two forms: a flat, saucer-like form, and a spider-like battle form. They are strong killing machines, but lack higher thought. The Cyberdisc can choose a target to kill each night (this counts towards KP). If the target has an action, the Cyberdisc can then 'extract' this action from the dead player and use it during the next day or night phase (whichever is applicable for the action). If the action has a use during the night, you can either choose to use the extracted power, or attempt to extract another action instead.
Chryssalid (Arsonist)
Described by the Uber Ethereal as a huge disappointment because of your lack of controllability, you were only deemed fit to breed and die. Chryssalids are swift and ferocious aliens that implant embryos into hosts as a basic primal urge. Once per night you can choose to implant a Chryssalid embryo into a player. If you are roleblocked in any way (this includes by the XCOM Assault), the roleblocker will leave with an implanted embryo after visiting you. Once per game (at any time during a night phase), you can release mating pheromones to hatch all of your Chryssalid embryos, killing everyone who had been growing one inside them. Players will not be notified if they are carrying a Chryssalid embryo, but if a targeted player is protected by a doctor, the embryo will not be successfully implanted. As Chryssalids lack basic intelligence and are difficult to control, you will not have access to the alien chat. Other members of the alien team will be notified if they have a Chryssalid in their numbers, but they will not be given the name.
EXALT
EXALT wins the game if they equal or outnumber XCOM and the Aliens. Possible roles are as follows:
EXALT Rookie (Townie)
As a recent recruit for EXALT, you still have a lot to learn and prove before your trust can be fully gained. You have no special abilities but your voice. Use it wisely.
EXALT Operative (Forger)
You are a standard foot-soldier with a proficiency in hacking. Each night you can PM the host the name of a player to reveal their last will. You have a 50% chance to steal the last will and replace it with a fake last will written by yourself. Note that last wills from a sanitised corpse are destroyed by the EXALT Medic and cannot be replaced.
EXALT Medic (Sanitiser)
You're a talented medic, but you're even better at cleaning up corpses and disposing of them with no trace. Once per night phase you can PM the host a players name. If that player dies during the night their role and alignment will not be revealed in the thread and their last will is destroyed. This information will be revealed to EXALT in their private chat.
EXALT Heavy (Rocketeer)
You are a foot-soldier armed to devastate anything with explosives. Once per game during the night phase you can fire a shredder rocket on a target player. This will kill the player and anyone else using an action on them. This cannot be blocked by healing actions.
EXALT Sniper (Sniper)
You are a talented sniper on the field with an impressive and accurate aim. During even numbered days you can target a player to line up a headshot on. You must send a player name in before majority is reached on a lynch. The shot will be fired during the subsequent night. If the player is protected by another player, the protector will die instead. Medikits cannot block a sniper shot.
Please PM any kills and actions to Feloreena. You may only send in actions once - you cannot withdraw or change your decided action PM after you have sent it. Please think carefully before sending it.
Last Wills
Every player in the game can set a Will in their name during the Night. You can change your Will later in the game once per Night Phase. If you use an Action at Night, it would be appreciated if you send your will with that same PM.
Wills will be revealed upon death, so anything you choose to write will be shared with everyone.
Death Notes
Every player with a killing role can send a Death Note with their killing action. Again, it would be appreciated if you could send this in with your action PM.
These will be revealed if the targeted player dies, so anything you choose to write will be shared with everyone.
Rules
Cheating:
Cheating includes (but is not limited to):
1. Posting after death. You may have one polite goodbye post, but it may not contain any potentially game-changing information.
2. Ruining the game by doing something like handing out your mafia's member list to the town.
3. Logging on to someone else's account to get their role or looking over someone's shoulder to get their role.
4. Posting screenshots of your inbox.
5. Posting or sharing any PM you receive from a host.
6. Getting yourself modkilled to help your team. Your non-majority-decided death may not be used as a bargaining chip.
7. Signing up more than once using smurf accounts.
8. Offering favours/items/bells outside of the game for ingame information.
9. Sharing accounts with other players.
10. Posting a false role PM phrased as if you received it from the host. You can still fake roleclaim, but you cannot make it look like you are posting a PM you received from the host.
ANYONE CAUGHT SHARING SCREENSHOTS FROM OBSERVER, PM, SCUM CHAT, ANYTHING WILL BE BANNED!
Cheating is not tolerated here as it ruins the game for everyone. The mods and admins here CAN take action.
Wisdom of the Crowds
Wisdom of the Crowds is in effect. PM me with the name of a player you do NOT want to play with. If I get enough PMs about a person, I will exclude them from the game. PMs will be treated with confidence. If I feel this is abused I may choose not to remove the player.
Replacements
Replacements will be made in the game until the end of Night 2. If a player is modkilled during the designated time, then they will be replaced by a player on the replacement list.
Time Cycle:
This game will follow a 48 hour day and 24 hour night cycle. In case I am not able to post around deadline, any votes after the 48 hour mark will not count and the game will be put on halt until the night post is up. The deadline will normally be 11PM GMT. Night may end earlier if all actions are sent in early. There will be a one hour resolution period before the end of night, where no further actions may be sent in. Relevant PMs will be sent out during this time.
Posting
Mod Font:
This is the mod colour. It is reserved for the host. Please do not use it.
Question Font:
This is the question colour. Use it to ask the host questions about the rules in public. You can also PM me.
Activity:
You must post in this thread at least once per full day/night cycle and vote every day while you are alive. If you fail to post or miss two votes, you will be modkilled. Spam and off-topic material will not tolerated.
Editing:
Editing is not allowed for any reason. Editing will result in a warning. After that, you will be modkilled. While I ask for everybody to post as concisely as possible, post again if you have to edit anything.
Observers' Chat:
Please refrain from revealing game-changing information in Observers' Chat (e.g. the identities of your team). Remember that the chat is not leakproof and game-ruining information CAN get out.
Inappropriate posts:
Mafia games can get heated and emotional. Please keep it civil and remember that what happens in Mafia stays in Mafia. Don't let things spill over to the rest of the forum, it's just a game. If you are unhappy with a player's posts, please PM me.
Play to win:
You should try your best to help your team win while you are alive and in the game. Clearly not playing towards your win objective will be grounds for a modkill and ban. However, this does not mean that you should try to win by being a jerk to the other players so they all want to quit playing.
This also means that you cannot leave the game without a good reason. These situations will be dealt with on a case by case basis. PM me if you need to leave the game.
You have been warned.
Voting Rules
- This game will use Majority Lynch. When a player attains over 50% of the vote, they will be immediately killed and Day will end (For example, with 14 players alive, a player requires 8 votes to be lynched). If I am not online and available to post when this occurs, the game will be paused until I can post. No vote changes or actions will be accepted during this period.
- If the deadline is reached without a majority, nobody will be lynched. This is considered a Deadline No Lynch. You may choose not to lynch, but you must make this clear (##VOTE: No Lynch).
- Voting is done in a separate thread, located here. You may announce and discuss your votes in this main thread, but only votes in the Voting thread will be counted. Do not PM me your vote.
- Please vote in the following format: ##VOTE: Username. Votes not done in the correct fashion may not be counted. I will update vote counts whenever I get the chance.
- If you want to change your vote, first type ##UNVOTE followed by your new vote ##VOTE: Username. You can change your vote at any time and as much as you like (within reason) up until a majority is reached.
- No conditional voting.
- You may vote for yourself. You may not vote for anyone dead or outside the game.
- Voting is required on a regular basis or you risk mod kill.
If you would like access to the Observers Chat, please PM me or state it during signups. Before you do, I ask that you possibly consider joining the replacements list instead. If you join the Observer Chat, you cannot become a replacement later in the game if needed. You CANNOT share the chat with living players, or any information from it.
If you have not read all the rules, go back and do so. I will not compensate for ignorance!
