This morning at 8AM (local time), two explosions rocked the Zaventem airport in Brussels, both confirmed to be suicide bombings. One of these happened in the departures area, while the other is reported to have happened near the runway.
Less than 30 minutes later, there was an explosion at the Maalbeek metro station in the city, which is just a few blocks away from the European Commission.

Official reports speak of 11 dead at the airport, and 20 dead at the metro station. There are also over 250 injured people, with a lot of people in critical condition, which may raise the death toll.

It's possible that these attacks were in retaliation for the arrest of Salah Abdeslam, the terrorist that managed to evade authorities for 126 days after the November 13 attacks in Paris, which happened last Friday (dead thread here).

The terror threat level was raised to 4 (the highest) in response to the attacks. It was 3 previously.

The border between Belgium and France has been closed in response. All traffic to and from Belgium is halted. The European countries surrounding Belgium are taking precautions to prevent any attacks that may have been planned along with these, and important figures in Brussels have been evacuated (one of them being Charles Michel, the Belgian prime minister).

There's a live blog by The Guardian which can be followed here.

Will update this post with any relevant information.

Yep, been all over the news here all morning.. dang. What a great thing to wake up to. :[

And yeah, seems like a good enough for them to attack now that they caught that other terrorist, it's like they've been waiting or something. They're not stupid that much you can say.

This is so terrible to hear, I can't believe this stuff just keeps happening. My thoughts go out to Belgium and I hope if any of the terrorists survived that they get caught.

^this too.

But yeah it seems a bit too coincidental to just be some random dude blasting off stuff.

Molenbeek, the "jihadist hotbed" in Brussels, is closer to the Maalbeek metro station than the metro station is to the airport. Molenbeek is where Abdeslam had been hiding, and where he was arrested. After the arrest on Friday police also reported there was evidence that Abdeslam had been planning new attacks in both Belgium and France with other jihadists in Molenbeek. The probability of this just being one of their plans being pushed through in retaliation is very high, if you ask me.

I'm just hoping that authorities in the various European countries that have been threatened take enough measures to prevent any more of these cowardly attacks.

Yeah that's what I meant, it might not be as random as some people think. And yes I hope they take care of things faster this time :[

Reports:

Something happening in the Dutch Hoofddorp. A train has been stopped and evacuated, all public transport on its way there is being re-routed. This train came from Brussels and was on its way to Schiphol, the main airport in the Netherlands. Edit: Two men arrested in the resulting investigation. Edit 2: Train was clear.

Emergency services are also en route to the Mediapark in Hilversum, where a "suspicious situation" is underway. Edit: One of the floors of the NOS building (main news source) has been completely evacuated. This happened due to an envelope with a white powder arriving on the department. Edit 2: Now confirmed to be a false alarm.

And there's a report that in the Bruges prison in Belgium, where Abdeslam is being held, a suspicious package has been found. Homes nearby have been evacuated, and police is investigating. Edit: Package has been investigated and disabled by the bomb disposal unit. It was apparently not dangerous.

First nov. 13th and now this?
I feel terrible for those who have a family member/friend who was injured or even killed in a vile-ly violent situation like this. Honestly I am so glad I don't know how anyone could do this.

This is horrible.

it's terrifying how you/a friend or family member might be getting ready to get on a train when
boom,
your whole life can be changed in a minute.
honestly I just hope they can get everything under control so they can investigate which group/network of terrorists did it.

the threat level in brussels has been raised to 4/4 and it is recommended anyone there rn doesn't use underground transport and trams.

remember guys nobody knows why these senseless acts of violence keep happening in europe and theres certainly no common people or motive for carrying out these attacks

also dont forget to label anyone who might suggest that theres a common theme with these attacks as racist

Yeah, I heard about it on the news here. I've some relatives in Brussel but I believe they are all okay. It's horribly sad to see this happen again even though it wasn't unexpected. I hope political leaders in my country now have the guts to finally make more money available for terrorism threat research services of the government as an attack get's more and more likely to happen anywhere.

This is terrible news. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families/friends. Hopefully justice will be served as soon as possible.

Are you supporting trump

what horrible & sad news - can you imagine? these innocent people are just getting up to go to work or school and that happens... their family, friends, lovers will never get to see them again. it doesn't seem like these attacks are stopping anytime soon. i hope Europe finds some kind of solution to it

There is no 'solution' so terrorism will stop. Terrorism will never stop, that's just as simple as it is. As long as fundamentalist people are walking out there, disagree with other people and weaponary is still on this earth, terrorism will go on. It's about preventing it as much as possible

There certainly is a clear connection with the refugee crisis, and I can say that being a socialist as much as I am. People who deny that are as wrong as those people who claim that the refugee crisis is the only cause of terrorism or that asylum seekers all have extremistic religious motives.
