This morning at 8AM (local time), two explosions rocked the Zaventem airport in Brussels, both confirmed to be suicide bombings. One of these happened in the departures area, while the other is reported to have happened near the runway.
Less than 30 minutes later, there was an explosion at the Maalbeek metro station in the city, which is just a few blocks away from the European Commission.
Official reports speak of 11 dead at the airport, and 20 dead at the metro station. There are also over 250 injured people, with a lot of people in critical condition, which may raise the death toll.
It's possible that these attacks were in retaliation for the arrest of Salah Abdeslam, the terrorist that managed to evade authorities for 126 days after the November 13 attacks in Paris, which happened last Friday (dead thread here).
The terror threat level was raised to 4 (the highest) in response to the attacks. It was 3 previously.
The border between Belgium and France has been closed in response. All traffic to and from Belgium is halted. The European countries surrounding Belgium are taking precautions to prevent any attacks that may have been planned along with these, and important figures in Brussels have been evacuated (one of them being Charles Michel, the Belgian prime minister).
There's a live blog by The Guardian which can be followed here.
Will update this post with any relevant information.
