Purrl's BSBFF
before you read this story is based off of Jack London's short story "How to Build a Fire" if you haven't read it, (I read it in class and i just did this because we were assigned it) beware of spoilers... this story is from the prospective of the man's dog. keep in mind i had to keep it PG because it is my school project... Hope you enjoy
So you ask how my friend died... Well, he wasn’t exactly my friend but I knew he died and I mourned his loss. He was an idiot, always failing at fires and basically deciding to go out in this weather in the first place! Now I will get to your question but I have to tell it all…
It was 70 degrees below 0 and I was freezing my tail off, literally, when my master and I decided to go out in the freezing cold weather to meet his “friends”.
I, however, did not approve of his plan and silently insulted him under my breath thinking “Man this guy is an idiot, who would want this much money anyway!” while wishing he would build a fire soon.
Later on he insulted our friendship by tricking me and making me fall into the ice cold water and he said I was “TESTING” it… testing it my little doggy tail… I yelped out “IDIOT! Get me out of this water!”
Then he said “Little doggie, I needed to see if it was going to be a lake or not...”
When he got me out we finally went to build our first fire… I am so excited and cold I can barely wag my tail! He finally builds the fire successfully for a while it works and we warm up… meanwhile the snow up on the spruce tree is melting and dripping onto the fire pit… then it finally lets go and lets out the fire. I am so frustrated with this guy so much I can’t even describe how angry I felt.
I barked out “You should of built it over there” I point with my nose to a nice spot on a hill that is flat with no trees.
He says “Oh, I never thought of that!” of course he did he never thinks.
Finally we got up and left the fire. I am a little stubborn at first but I don’t want to be left behind so I follow him anyway. A little while more down the trail Brainless McGee falls through ice! I mean come on man! Didn’t you see that it was a lake!?
I finally bark in frustration “ARGH! You moron! What are you doing!? Now you have to build ANOTHER fire!”
Then he said “I know Captain Obvious I am freezing my bum off right now! Help me out of here!”
So he builds the fire and we are nice and comfy when he gets this nutty idea that he wants to KILL me, and put his HANDS inside of me.
I bark “Dude, you aren’t doing this today!” and quickly sprint off. While sprinting I bark “Moron… you should have brought that old timer…” But of course he ignores me and gives me the silent treatment. He runs after me until he finally stops he rest under a tree. There he looks like he is terribly pale, and he just went through a lot.
He mutters something along the lines of “You were right old Hoss, you were right”
My last words I could say to him was “You know it bub, you really should have brought him.” Finally I see him close his eyes… I step towards him slowly in caution and I smell his death. I mourn at that tree for a bit and then go find the nearest camp where there was the main things that everyone needs in life: shelter, food, and water.
Now I leave you with the advice of when you go on a trip, always bring food, water, and a tent. Unless you want to end up like Brainless McGee over here that died in the snow. I hope you listened and I always wish everyone a safe travel.
