I remembered waking up late for school one day and when I can rushing down the stairs to hurry to school I saw my family all curled together on the couch. My hand was just about on the handle of the front door when I saw them, I saw the fear in their faces with their eyes fixed on the t.v.I dropped my backpack on the ground and ran over to the couch, footage of people mauling each other and getting back up after being fatally shot, "Breaking News" streaming across the screen. A horrible virus they had said, nobody knew the cause but it had started in China and rapidly spread throughout the country as they tried to contain it, but failing. They tried to hurry and shut down all the transportation and get all of the infected detained and in isolation but it just kept spreading and spreading. That first day we stayed home but in the next week during school we didn't even learn anything, all the teachers just kind of turned on the t.v. and we just watched, all day. Most of us were so fixed on it we didn't even leave for breaks or anything. It only took a month to get to the United States. It had wiped out most of Asia and Europe by the time it made it over. As soon as it touched down they shut down all the schools and my dad as a doctor was moved to a special facility with the my sister, boyfriend and I. It was a giant cement walled facility where we lived in a tiny jail cell like room in a big warehouse building, with bunk beds. There was another family in the same room as us with a baby and I remember not being able to sleep most nights because the baby would cry and then the babies mom would cry trying to calm it down. The food was like cafeteria food at school, all unknown slop like mixes, and weird tasting water. They didn't let us watch t.v. anymore, and on the rare occasion that I would even get to see my dad he wouldn't tell us anything. Ted would get so mad he would try to ask things of the guards who patrolled around and they would stand there like the Queen's guards in London that would stand still no matter what you did. He would yell at them and I would have to pull him away so he could calm down. My sister started getting sick while we were there and one night while we were sleeping the guards came in and ripped her from my arms, I screamed and screamed that it was something else, it wasn't the virus, Ted tried to pull her away from the guards then they hit him in the face with the butt of their guns until he was on the ground bleeding. I couldn't sleep anymore after that, and I didn't see my dad after that either. Ted would hold me and whisper that everything was going to be ok, that my sister was just in care and they were getting her better and that any day they were going to give her back, but they didn't. The food slowly got worse and worse, watered down, smaller portions and then the sounds of gun shots and explosions started in the distance and then got closer day by day, until you could swear they were in the building. One day while we were out in the cafeteria for breakfast guns started going off like crazy, followed by yelling and screaming and everyone in the cafeteria started freaking out, the lights started flickering and then the fire system started going off raining water down on all of us. I could see out the doors of the side of the cafeteria people starting to run by first people in the mandated outfits, then people covered in blood, then guards. All of the people were pushed up against the side of the cafeteria with no doors or windows, huddled together waiting for it to pass. The lights continued flickering and my face was pressed into Ted's chest with his arms around me. Another group of people covered in blood came running by and one of them stopped and looked in the window. I could see his face between the flickers of light, it was the first time I had seen an infected, the skin from around his mouth was missing, his face covered in blood, ripped clothes, and he started visibly sniffing the air. He let out a guttural noise and some of the other infected with him turned and faced the doors as well. The slammed their bodies into the doors until one of them gave in. The guards in the room started shooting them but they kept coming, more coming into the room behind them. I saw one take seven shots to the chest as it ran towards one of the guards and then ripped the guards throat out with it's teeth. Everyone in the room was scrambling, the infected taking some of them down, blood everywhere. Ted pulled me out of one of the doors and down the long hallway, there were bodies strewn all over the ground. We found our room and ran in, I grabbed my backpack off our bed and got ready to run back out, Ted nudged me when I had my hand on the door, I turned and saw the mom we shared the room with sitting in the corner of the bottom bunk bed on her side of the room, rocking back and fourth. I stood behind Ted as he approached her asking if she was ok, she was making small sobbing noises and as we got closer we saw blood on the bed. "Are you ok ma'am, are you hurt?" he said as he reached out for her shoulder and she turned around, her eyes milky white and blood on her face, in her arms were the bloody remains of her baby that she had clearly eaten and we then saw the big bite mark on her arm from where she got infected. She growled at us and went back to eating. We darted out of the room super quickly. We saw guards running through the halls and could see a door open down one of the halls. We ran quickly to the exit and found people scrambling around piling into big jeep like cars, we hopped onto the nearest one that had about twelve other people in the back of it. I sat on Ted's lap and started sobbing. We saw helicopters start to take off from the base as well and I could only hope that my sister and father were in one of them.
