The Late Great Turt
When we first got separated we were bunking in an old museum, it had all sorts of little protective gates over the doors and windows so we figured it would be safe for a while. It was Ted and I, and a small family consisting of a young woman, her six year old son, and her military ex husband. It wasn't too far after we left Malachi's farm, there was a very small town nearby where a group of military were still fighting off the infected, they were all bunking down in buildings hiding out during the night and then fighting them during the day because they were slower during the day. Ted and, I want to say his name was Ryan or Brian but I can't fully remember, the men, would go out and try to gather supplies and look for anything to help us survive in the town, sometimes I would sneak out behind them but they would always get mad, I didn't want to feel useless just because I was a woman. The man's wife was near hysterical, she would sit by the wall rocking back and fourth mumbling and her son would hide under a little Thomas the Train blanket right next to her until his dad got back. They didn't really make the best of company. When the men went out for supplies they would always be back by night, and we would know it was night when the gunshots died down because in the little back room of the museum we were in had no windows. "We'll be back my sweet Nightingale." Ted said kissing me goodbye, I grabbed his arm and pulled him in for one more, looking back I could tell it was because I already knew. He never did keep his promise. Night came and went, and then gun shots started up again. I grabbed one of the guns that they left us to protect ourselves in case anything happened. "I'm going, you can either come or stay." I said extending my hand towards the wife, her eyes widened and she pushed herself against the wall. "They're out there, they'll be back, they're out there, they're out there!" She shouted quickly jittering, the little boy poked his eyes out of his blanket and then quickly covered them back up. "Well I'm going." I grabbed a little canteen we had and some disgusting freeze dried meals the military had given us, and stuffed them all in my pack before leaving. I took down the barricade the men had us put up and take down to let them in, it was some really heavy metal boxes used to preserve things in the museum. I shut the door behind me and ran out through the foyer, out the door and into the sun, there weren't very many infected, but a few were coming up the road and I quickly saw bullets flying past me and into their bodies. "Get over here!" a man behind a sideways car yelled at me. I ducked behind the car with him, "Are you suicidal or just stupid?" "Probably both?" I snickered. "Mmmhmm, seems like it girl. Shouldn't you be in the safe zone?" He gestured towards the Museum. "I am looking for the men who left there yesterday morning." I said watching the man peek around the side of the car and blow the head clean off one of the infected. "Gone West last I heard, a shipment of supplies dropped out in a field down there, ain't come back though." he let off a few more shots at another infected person down the road, "Shambler chow now, they gotta be." I looked at the ground thinking about that possibility for no more than a few seconds, before decided that it wasn't possible. "No, which way is West?" I shouted as he shot some more. "What?" "I said which way is West?" He chuckled at me, "Really? Oh my god, you're serious." He shuffled into his pocket and pulled out a little Swiss Army multi-tool with a little compass on it and handed it to me. "If y'all get yourself killed it ain't my fault, can't have none of your pretty little burden on my mind alright." He turned the towards me lowering his gun, "you gotta go that way, they took a truck, so I don't know how you think you'll get caught up." I looked behind me the way he pointed it was a straight road leading out into more crops, I got out from behind the car and started walking off in that direction holding the gun in front of me. "I hope you know how to use that thing!" he laughed from behind me, I quickly turned and shot the nearest infected dead in the forehead. "Oh damn." I heard him quietly say to himself and I jogged off into the field. I ended up finding the drop but it had already been opened and everything taken from it and there were no definitive tracks going any one direction, I decided from that point that West was the best bet since we had talked about heading that way, since Ted was from there anyways, and we all kind of agreed that the infection was land locked.
