Mars is approximately half the diameter of Earth. Mars is less dense than Earth, having 15% of Earth’s volume and 11% of Earth’s mass, resulting in about 38% of Earth’s surface gravity. Mars is a rocky planet, and can have temperatures anywhere from -200? to 70?. It’s distance from the sun is 2.278x10^11a.u. What I found intriguing about Mars was that it was named after the Roman god of war, and that it has the nickname “Red Planet” due to its reddish appearance. Mars is important to investigate due to its similarity to Earth, not only can it tell us more about the planet we inhabit but in the future we may possibly discover a sustainable way to live on Mars.

A mission to Mars would be to discover more about our planet and figure out how to make life sustainable on another planet. According to CNN, they are planning to launch a rocket named Orion, based on the old apollo command modules, to begin testing space tourism. The old apollo command modules look like a roomy, rounded, trapezoid. They would have to withstand freezing temperatures, as Mars is a very cold planet. It would take .707 years, or about 8.8 months, to travel from Earth to Mars. If the spacecraft where to stay in Mars synchronous orbit, it’d be 20423094.12 meters above the planet’s surface, and would travel at about 1.45x10^10 m/s. If it were to enter the low orbit, one period would be 1.66 hours, and it would travel at a speed of1.26x10^7 m/s.
