The "I learned something new today!" Thread

In Inuit folklore, there was Tuniit— a race of giants who are known as the “shy giants”. They were kind and spoke simply, in Kutak or “baby-talk.”
The giants lived before the Inuit people, but what’s also interesting to note is that in the myths, the giants left around the same time as the real-life Dorset people— who preceded the Inuit. Whether or not the giants were their interpretation of the Dorset people, it’s a curious note.

TIL that in the Japanese language, Germany is called ドイツ, or "Doitsu" in Romanji. which is kinda nice because it seems like their best interpretation of "Deutsche" in their language.

Inca beliefs in Mama Qucha and other water gods show that they understood the water cycle. They knew the seawater rose to rain, which then fell onto the ground.

I just found out that Boo is called ‘Teresa’ in Japanese.

I love King Teresa, apparently.
When I first heard this, I remember thinking it was funny, since I knew a Teresa at the time. 😂

Apparently, it comes from the Japanese word Tereru meaning "to be shy", and is about how the Boos hide whenever you get close to them.

Roger Ebert’s favorite video game was Cosmology of Kyoto, which takes you on a dark, paranormal journey through 900s AD Japan. (Wrote more about it in the random thoughts— video game edition thread)

Cayenne pepper helps with vertigo and Ménière’s disease. (Both cause balance issues, interestingly enough.)

Puerto Rico doesn't get SNAP benefits, although they are available in the 50 states and a few other U.S. territories. (Guam and Virgin Islands)

You all probably know this, but I've never bothered looking up Japanese names for Mario, but Kinpio is Toad's name. I only learned that because someone gave me chocolate, last year, that I guess came from Japan?

And Bowser's Japanese name is just called "Koopa".

Speaking of, the name "Kinopio" actually derives from the japanese word for mushrooms which is "kinoko". Just like when the English localized name "Toad" is derived from "toadstool" which is a type of mushroom.
