the "like" button?

when i press the like button below a post does that mean i'm giving it a thumbs up or thumbs down? after i press it it turns red with a 1??

When it turns red it means you've liked it. Red doesn't mean "dislike" the post, there's no way to give a post a negative "review"
The red thumbs down is more of a "unlike" button, so if you press it again it'll unlike the post.
