They've turned the Wii into trash

Lol, their regular DS and Wii have always been crap since you could only connect to certain security anyways. Like how good is it to only go into open and WEP?

That restriction only applied to the DS, not the Wii.

I was never been able to use DS, so that doesn't really bother me. The Wii's wifi was only good for Mario Kart.

While it's sad to see the ds and wii wifi go, all good things come to an end. And didn't Nintendo lose a lot of money due to the Year of Luigi? IDK of course, just something I heard.

Wii U has a lot of potential but I haven't seen anything that really takes advantage of it that caught my own interests. I also predict they will release gamecube games for wiiU to download since they seem to be going up the generations. [hope so anyway] So I'm not giving up the WiiU just yet or Nintendo. v u v

It's still quite possible to use Pokegen with the transporter if you make your gens right and use an online GTS spoof service, haha. Just throwing that in there because I saw some people complaining about no more Pokegen. The games don't know the difference so even if the real servers are long gone you can still create and broadcast your fake GTS.

Anyway, the Wii was released in 2006. That means they've had their server up for what, almost eight years now? They've released a new console and are focusing on it. No one's developing for the Wii / DS anymore. It's obsolete tech. It makes perfect sense to transition away from it. I would much rather that than try and move to a paid server model, honestly.

Eight years is an extremely long time for a console and when many people are transitioning - and they are, even if the sales are not exceptional the Wii U definitely has a market - it doesn't make sense to keep servers up, particularly with the GameSpy thing. It wouldn't make sense to waste more money trying to develop their own servers for obsolete technology.

Guys, to raise awareness. Please click here, for instructions on how to connect to the custom server. Then reply back on this page to test if it's working.

I think the Wii version wasn't a terrible update. It was mostly the same game, true. But there were some differences worth sniffing out :D

You can no longer use the WiFi to do things with people? Like on the summer island? I might have to let my sister keep it.

The Wifi shutdown only affects the Wii and the DS. The Wii U and the 3DS will still be able to connect to Wifi.

Wow... That makes me feel old XD
I feel kinda upset that Nintendo is the failing company, but then, it's only because they don't give in to selling all the games about war and other things like that and try to keep a family audience. They even made the Wii to try and keep everybody active and have put pedometer features in their games and inbuilt for the 3DS, but of course, no, everyone would rather sit and shoot guns for 5 hours straight. It's a shame really because parents buy games too old for their kids and then they see Nintendo as 'babyish', so they've lost one age group. Teenagers are the same as the kids too and there aren't many huge Nintendo-based fandoms around.

And before anyone says it, it's fine if you like Sony and Microsoft (I prefer Microsoft games to Sony, just to put it out there) but it's how the mindset of the masses don't match Nintendo. Not many people want to be active. Not many people want to play a game with 'nothing to do' but talk to a bunch of animals and fish. And that's the problem that Nintendo is struggling to cope with.

Because I'm sporty and subject to nostalgia and cuteness, Nintendo is perfect for me.

one thing I love about nintendo is how they dont completely turn to fighting games. so many other companies make only fighting and shooting and killing games. nintendo is trying their best to stay family friendly and I like that. nintendo makes games for everyone to enjoy. they cater to everyone. not just one audience. and yes I agree that all the shooting games really have no point to them. nintendo has imported a couple of third party games into the wiiu but most of their games are still nintendo made and are fun for everyone. I do wish that nintendo never ended up shutting doen their wifi servers though. but at least they are still a family friendly company.

also many PC games charge almost 200$ a year for membership and then additional money for in game items. with nintendo you buy the game and you have it forever. thats another thing I love about nintendo. although i do not think that nintendo is a failing company, I do think that they are losing some money. and yes about sony and microsoft, they are just getting richer and richer for the fighting games, but nintendo is such a big company I dont think they could ever go bankrupt. and yes I dont play those types of fighting games, and I probably wont ever play fighting games. I enjoy playing nintendo games though.

I disagree.
While the day came months ago, many of my friends still have their Wii and DS. I have the DSIXL and the Wii. While I cant trade fruit with anyone over Wi-Fi unless someone comes to my house with there Wii o_O... Ok I dont know what Im saying but I cant afford A Wii U..

It's already been said, but it is true that Nintendo couldn't afford to keep the servers alive, mainly because they haven't got enough sales from the Wii U.

I only buy these consoles for certain games. AC, Zelda and Mario. I bought a Wii U with Christmas money and splurged and bought the 3DS 2 weeks ago. I work hard for my money (sometimes 60 hours a week) and I love that Nintendo doesn't charge for membership. Also the Nintendo club is a great perk with pretty cool rewards.
Our Wii doesn't get played much anymore but it gives me Netflix and hulu in my bedroom.

I know! I never visited anyone's town, and no one has ever visited mine, but when I tried, my dad had said that they had turned off the wireless for off the Wii and DS!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know why Nintendo is actually doing this, but I think this is like what Microsoft is doing. When a new system comes out, they end support for their previous systems. Eventually, it makes older systems less valuable. They don't want to spend their money on all systems at once, so they try to stay up to date by focusing on their current systems.

And I have seen City Folk get the axe enough. It was the most hated because of some things that didn't go right, the Wii lost support, nobody can visit other towns through wi-fi, and nobody can visit other towns through local wireless.

It's super sad that the wifi got shut off, really. The other day I was playing Kirby's Epic Yarn with my friend and we took a cute screenshot. I tried to send it to myself by email, and then I remembered that the wifi was gone.

Okay I felt compelled to make a statement here because I mean come on, I love Nintendo. That said, the reason they stopped online services for the Wii/DS isn't because of sales. Once Nintendo released the web service for the Wii U and 3DS and what not, they let a different company take control of those servers so they could concentrate on their newer consoles, then that company decided they didn't want to carry a "dying server" and shut it down.

So it isn't all Nintendo.

The real story

...they let a different company take control of those servers so they could concentrate on their newer consoles, then that company decided they didn't want to carry a "dying server" and shut it down.
Not quite. Glu Mobile is the company that bought GameSpy (where the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection servers were at) and they demanded a lot of money from developers (Nintendo included) to maintain their severs there. Due to how more expensive it is to keep the servers running (thanks to Glu Mobile) and how old the games are, Nintendo decided to let them terminate Nintendo WFC servers. From what I heard/read.

So blame Glu Mobile, not Nintendo.

And finally, someone done some research before blindly jumping to conclusions.

No matter what, what kind of Wiid were they on when they terminated DS and Wii servers? (I just made a joke, now laugh, mwuhahahha!)
