Thoughts on Rap?

I'm originally from Detroit, MI.. My late childhood best friend was absolutely obsessed with Eminem when we were only like 9 years old, she was the one who introduced me to both Eminem and rap in general.. and then there's my husband who love love loves Eminem.. I also have a cousin who worked for Eminem for a long time... I rest my case, I am definitely obligated to like Eminem 😅 to be fair I do enjoy listening to his older stuff from time to time, but he has just been overplayed in my life
I can understand that actually. It's the reason I haven't watched shows like Walking Dead. I heard about it everyday from so many people, and I decided I wouldn't watch it because it would just annoy me after all of the hype.

Rap isn't a genre I've ever really gotten into. Not saying I hate it, just what I've heard hasn't enticed me to explore it further.

I don't know how in the world I found out about it, but there is this rap song by Wiz Khalifa I believe it was that samples Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart) by The Stylistics, one of my longtime favorite songs. So I find the rap song sampling it to be amusing. There's quite something about hearing a sample of an oboe playing behind a rap song.

I bet you there's more rap out there like that I might like. It depends largely on what kind of influence they're taking from, I suppose... I love classic (as in 70s and before) soul/R&B.

I find it amusing that country and rap have been compared. From a musical standpoint, both genres are great at telling a story.

I think people generally like music for two reasons... if the lyrics speak to them, or if they enjoy the sounds/beats... and I believe a person's voice falls in the middle... it can be both musical, and tell a story!

To bring this back to topic, I feel like Rap and country both tell great stories. It just might depend on your preference for the sound.

But even more on topic, I Love the 90's rap... Dre, Snoop, Eminem... D12, Cypress Hill, Outkast. (Leaning towards west coast)
You like west coast rap...
Stand your ground! Don't say you like Eminem because you feel obligated!

I will join you in a sense... I have no feelings towards Tupac. I might get some criticism for saying this, but I think he was overrated as a rapper.

But that's my opinion. And I am sticking with it. You should stick to your opinions too!
but don't like Tupac? 👀

I find this amusing lol. Cypress Hill is cool! A while back, my coworkers and I had gone out to breakfast. While we were sitting there, one of their songs came on. We were so excited! Usually, stores/restaurants around here don't play old school rap so it was nice to hear. Then an EPMD song came on and we were like "Alright!" Once they played an Atmosphere song, I really nerded out lol since even they weren't familiar with them.

I understand, but I also stood up for Eminem from Detroit. I also said I "lean" west coast. I never liked Tupac's music, but it doesn't mean I don't enjoy other's.

To be fair, I have never heard of EPMD, so I will give them a listen! And I wish I could visit that breakfast place that plays old school rap! It sounds like a vegan bar in my area that plays nothing but old school punk music. I love establishments like that!

If you asked me this when the thread was started I would have probably made a joke about being the only black person in the world who doesn’t like rap music. Which is actually why I refrained from posting here in the first place. But recently I’ve started to warm up to it. I’d say there’s some modern rappers who are actually genuinely good, like Kendrick or Tyler. It’s not something I’d go out of my way to listen to super often, so I guess in that respect I’m still weird, but it’s still not bad. It’s a case of Sturgeon’s Law where what’s good is good, but most of it is trash. Especially the ones where all they’re talking about is how many *****es they ****ed or making it seem like being in gangs and shooting up [n-words] every day is a good thing. I still think those ones are ass. That’s what most people at my school listen to since it’s ghetto as hell here, which contributed to why I hated the genre for so long. But I feel like it’s still better than I’d given it credit for.

Also, the best rap song of all time is the main theme of Sonic 06 His World, no other answers will be accepted.
