Thoughts on Tiktok?

Honestly because Social Media these days is getting more and more unbearable TikTok was one of the reasons why certain young people always seem to do stupid trends that are popular.

i don't use the app myself, but a friend of mine sends me videos of this guy on tiktok replicating vintage recipes so that i have new ideas for food to terrorize my family with, so it can't be all bad! i think it lacks a lot of what made vine so good since a lot of people compare the two, but it's got some good content in its own right.

I really like it. I initially downloaded it when it was still being advertised as the Musical.ly successor, so it was mostly as a joke. However, I saw that there were some genuinely funny videos on it and I decided to stick around. I think the app is definitely multifaceted, and your experience will likely be dictated by luck to a certain extent, but it’s definitely not the “those darn youngins!” type of place that many assume it to be. There’s everything from news to science to pets to art to video games to…. The list goes on. It also created the Ratatouille musical which goes to show just how talented some users are.

I’ve found some very interesting things on TikTok sometimes useful lot of times not so much, that’s all I’ll say

I have mixed feelings.

TikTok itself is a fun app. You can add different effects and music to your videos, and there are videos on there that are entertaining, cute, funny, and helpful.

But there are sooooooo many toxic people on there. One of the main examples is people participating in the Autism challenge, which mocks the condition and is considered ableism. And a lot of the videos people make are cringe.

Me and my partner are always watching tiktoks and laughing our butts off. You gotta find the right area of tiktok. I suggest getting your algorithm to the gay side of tiktok or else it's just boring. Or maybe it's just me?

My friend has gotten popular on tiktok so I always enjoy checking their videos for daily shenanigans. They recently mentioned me in their mother's day video cause I'm the mom friend of the group which made me feel special. I can't see them in person much until we both get our second dose of the vaccine, so watching any friends videos feels comforting!

tiktok can be really annoying and stressful bc of so much dumb and offensive content, but once you start finding the videos you like (and giving them a like), the app puts that into an algorithm so it can cater your "for you" page. right now my "for you" page is mainly really funny nonsense (that's not offensive in any way) and some scientific/factual content.

Never actually had the app and I don't really feel an urge to suddenly download it. I've come across some of the tiktok clips on youtube and other places and seems to be a mix of funny & sometimes cringy content, tbh or clips that don't make sense to me where people are just "reacting" to other people's clips but they just put their blank expression face on there and then...that's it (and it gets thousands of views and likes, like whut...?? 😅). I have younger nieces and nephews who use the app, though.

i don’t know, i downloaded the app once but i never got into it. it’s not appealing to me but i can understand why it attracts people my age, i just find some videos on there very dumb and some tiktokers can be super annoying. as far as tiktok goes, i (rarely) watch art videos from the platform uploaded to youtube.

i think it's super annoying, especially bc ads for it pop up on youtube videos constantly and my dad uses it (cringe ik) and sends me stupid **** all the time 🙄🙄

this alone is enough to make me despise the platform.

I don’t particularly like it, and cannot use it, but I think it is still probably much better than YouTube. Like any social media I can imagine there is some good content a ton of just absolute garbage.

I haven't tried tiktok, but it seems mostly unappealing. Using my phone to watch videos, especially videos with sound, is not for me. I'm a fairly private person and I share a small apartment, so the thought of disturbing my partner or them knowing what I'm up to because I'm broadcasting videos with sound and music kind of unsettles me. I'm more keen to watch youtube videos with a headset at my PC.

From what I've seen of it, it's a mixture of what Youtube used to be years ago before TikTok's primary demographic would have ever seen it (pointless miming of songs, crappy dances, short dumb videos that nobody outside of your friends think are funny or interesting) Vines (short try hard anti comedy) and people just being rich for the sake of being rich.

Basically, it can go away.

I don't use it. I've seen some cute animal TikToks on Youtube and stuff, but that's pretty much been the extent of my exposure to it. I'm sure there's some good stuff on there, but a lot of the music/dances and challenges that go around don't really interest me, and I know sifting through the toxic/offensive content would annoy me to no end, so I don't have any real desire to check it out myself. I'm not really into social media in general, though, so I'm not sure my disinterest is strictly a TikTok thing.

yeah it really makes me feel old because I don't like it much lmao

the format is just sort of unappealing the way vine was for me. It looks like there's a lot of terrible content you have to sift through to find something funny/you like and I'd rather just stick with longer video formats like youtube idk

I don’t have any interest in Tiktok. I have a few family members that have the app and enjoy it, but I don’t care much to join and see what’s on there. It is what it is.

The stuff you first see when you open the app is most likely not what you will see after a few days. The algorithm figures out what kinds of videos you like and gives you topics related to that. My feed is usually full of tips for games that I'm currently playing and book recommendations. Every now and then a random video pops up, but if you just say not interested you won't see videos like that or topics related to that video in your feed.
