Ok, when I first started the playing City Folk, and got done with nook and everything, I played about 1 day. I then decided to see how far the years went, which was only 2035.
So i went anyway, just to see what happened. When I got done, I corrected my date, back to 2008.
Tom Nook then told me that tomorrow he would be closing down his store to upgrade.
I have since then started a new game, but it appears that Tom Nook now upgrades with time, and not the amount of money that you give him.
